EDWARD SERSEN
April 8, 1930 - April 14, 2019

After a lengthy illness Ed died peacefully at the Grace Hospital.
Eddy was born and lived his life in Winnipeg where he was an accomplished jazz drummer and was well known in the music community. He was also an avid golfer and hole-in-one club member. Ed had many friends over the years who have sadly passed before him. He enjoyed the Blue Bombers and rarely missed a CFL game. After games he and best friend Ray Moga would share banter recapping highlights. He was a generous man who loved to cook for people who always looked forward to his meals.
Ed was a loving father and is greatly missed by his daughter Lisa who lives in BC.
Donations can be made to the Grace Hospital in Ed's memory.
He is laid to rest at Holy Family cemetery with his predeceased parents, Louis and Sophie Sersen. A memorial will take place and be announced at later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Happened to be looking up an Obit of a friend and was saddened to see Ed's Obituary. When I was growing up and watching shows like, "The house that Jack built", and many other Jazz shows, there was Ed. He was one of top players in Winnipeg for many years. He was one of my favorite drummers in town, and was an inspiration. Like Ed, I was also a Krupa fan, and the way Ed worked those drums he reminded me of Krupa. As I, myself got into the music field was very lucky to spend time with Ed and Reg Kelln during the day at their "Modern Drum Shop" on Sargent and at our favorite "Leggers" after hours. There isn't many of us musicians left from that era of great music, musicians, and Jazz. So I thought as a small representative of your musician friends, to say sorry your gone, and we all miss you and your hip talk. Love ya Sticks. - Posted by: Sticks McEwen (Fellow drummer) on: Oct 21, 2021

  • So sad to hear of Ed’s passing this way... over a year later. The last time I saw Ed was in the summer of 2008. He was a great friend of our family. He was a staple at our place for years when we lived on Lumsden Avenue in Winnipeg. Ed taught me the finer things that jazz music had to offer. My most prized memory was when Ed treated me to a jazz concert back in 1976 to see the great Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and my all time favourite guitarist Joe Pass. He would come downstairs to our basement where our Little Rock band would practice and he would proceed to start teaching us “real music” ... that being his beloved jazz! He has always remained in my heart and memories and was an instrumental figure along with my mother in moulding my love of jazz. Ed was also there for me at my lowest in life and really took care of me and helped me heal. Ed was a private person and thus was extremely difficult to locate at times. My heart goes out to his daughter Lisa and if she ever reads this I just want her to know that Ed meant the world to me and taught me so much of life and jazz music. The next time I get to visit Winnipeg I will make sure to pay him a visit at his graveside to let him know how much I miss him and how much he meant to me. R.I.P. Eddie ol pal. Say hello to Gene Krupa your favourite drummer and keep those paradidles solid and on time! Your friend Todd Martin - Posted by: Todd Martin (Family friend) on: Dec 12, 2020
