GUNTER JACOB

It is with sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gunter Jacob in Thailand on April 17, 2019. Gunter was born to Georg and Charlotte Jacob on January 8, 1935 in Ebersdorf, Germany.
He is survived by Irene, children, Marianne Jacob, Rosemarie (Albert) Overwater, David Jacob and Michael Jacob, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, brothers, Fritz, Manfred and Paul and sister Inge. Gunter was predeceased by his sister Irene Klohs.
As a child he was obligated to help his family's business and did so by making deliveries on his bicycle, etc. Gunter was a young child growing up in a war-torn world and witnessed some horrific scenes that he rarely would talk about. After the war Germany needed rebuilding and Dad learned the trade of masonry.
At 18 years of age Dad immigrated to Winnipeg with little money and no English. His first English words learned were, "I need a job" and he got that job as a bricklayer and that eventually lead Dad to, with the help of a partner, to start their own successful masonry business, Schultz and Jacob Masonry, and went on to build banks and apartment buildings. By the age of 45, Dad had had enough of bricklaying in freezing weather and took his wife Irene and two sons, David and Michael to Nanaimo and built their house and started Schultz and Jacob Masonry, BC. He found out early that owning buildings was more profitable than just building them and finished his career as a property owner as opposed to being just the builder.
One pastime that Dad enjoyed when he had spare time was fishing whether at different lakes in Manitoba or sweetwater and ocean fishing at Vancouver Island. When Dad would come to Winnipeg he would bring two litre milk cartons containing fresh frozen salmon and sometimes fresh smoked lox. Many years of hard work were hard on his body, and it's no wonder he hated the cold and sought warmer climes such as Mexico, the Philippines and finally Thailand.
Gunter Jacob was not large in structure, and he put up a gruff front but he was only trying to hide the fact that he had a huge heart for the people he loved. Sadly and ironically, that same big heart lead to his demise.
He will be sorely missed by those who knew him. We love you Dad.
Celebration of Gunter's life is on Friday, May 10, 2019, 7:00 p.m. at 90 Sinawik Bay.

  • Gunter was one of our sub-contractors at Ladco Homes for many years. I thought of him often but never connected after he moved to BC. I still relish our lunches at the Windsorian especially when Marianne was working. I tried to connect over the last few years but was unable to locate him. A neighbour with a similar name did not know his whereabouts. He was Great Guy and always enjoyed our working relationship. - Posted by: Don Giesbrecht (Friend & Co-worker) on: Apr 27, 2019
