MORRIS LAVERNE HOGAN
(aka CHAPPIE)

Morris Laverne Hogan passed away at Richmond Lions Manor Bridgeport, in Richmond, British Columbia, on Friday, April 26, 2019 at the age of 90.
Chappie was born in Thunder Bay on July 3, 1928. He later moved to Winnipeg and lived in the basement of his brother Jack's (Mildred) home and started working as a baker at Toastmasters before moving on to his lifelong career as a railway worker at Canadian National Railway, retiring as a Yardmaster.
In 2003, after the death of his wife of 40 years, Chappie moved to Richmond, BC to live with his daughter Kelly and her husband Bernie. In 2006, he moved to the island and lived with his son Ron and his wife Sandra in Duncan, BC where he made some new friends and volunteered at the Senior Centre. In 2016 he relocated to Richmond and stayed with his daughter Kelly for a brief period before moving into Richmond Lions Manor.
He was predeceased by his parents, Morris Joseph Hogan and Louise Pearl Hogan (nee Hoben), his father and mother-in-law, James Reginald Marshall and Blanche Elma Marshall (nee Dell), his brothers, Jack and Brian, sisters, Morrisine and Mona, his granddaughters, Phoenix and Misty, and his wife Donna (nee Marshall).
He will be lovingly remembered by his two brothers, Bruce (Barb) and Barry (Marilyn), his sister Linda (Alan) Beaudry, his sisters-in-law, Mildred Hogan, Susan (Don) Dilay and Jane (Bob) Russell, his brother-in-law Richard (Diane) Marshall, his nine children, Ron (Sandra) Greenaway, Val Greenaway, John (Margaret) Greenaway, David (Maureen) Greenaway, Rob (Kelly) Greenaway, Rebecca Jacobs, Heather Kirton, Kelly (Bernie) Hogan and Marlene Hogan, his grandchildren, Christina (Sandy) Greenaway, Shane (Angele) Greenaway, Donna-Marie (Garry) Price, Wendy Greenaway, Geoffrey Hogan, Cean (Rebecca) Hunkin, Daniel Jacobs and Jordan, along with his great-grandchildren, Caden, Robyn, Kory (Sabrina) and Nicolas, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
He will be fondly remembered for his backlane scrub-hockey skills with his children and any neighbourhood child that wanted to play, dodgeball with Donna and the kids in the summer, the summers at Lees Cabins at Clear Lake, chasing Mom and the children with a garden hose (inside the house), starting each day with a song and his colourful use of the English language, his love for the ponies and betting at the track, as well as countless hours playing chess with friends and family throughout the years, his philosophical and political debates and the annual Christmas parties of song and merriment were a much anticipated event by many.
Cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest with Donna in the Marshall Plot at the Stenabaugh Cemetery in Ontario.
Chappie will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held in Winnipeg at a later date.

  • We miss you terribly Dad. Geoffrey and I still sing songs by Al Jolson and so many more. We talk to you very day. See you very day. We talk about funny things you have done and funny things you said. We laugh about your dancing and funny faces that you make. You're with us all the time. Our hearts broke when you left for heaven to be with Mom. We miss you Dad. So much, WE BOTH LOVE YOU DAD. FOREVER. We send kisses and hugs to heaven for you and Mom. Your our light and our home. We love you. Heart and soul we do. Love You Forever Always Heather and Geoffrey - Posted by: Heather Hogan and My Son Geoffrey Hogan (Daughter and Grandson) on: Jul 29, 2020

  • Oh so sorry to read that Chappie has passed. Truly a pleasure to know when I was caring for Donna, in their Charleswood home before She passed. I treasured his love for music, especially Al Jolsen. Kelly, I am extending a hug and my condolences. - Posted by: Cathy (Caregiver) on: May 21, 2019

  • Things I learned from my father-in-law....... I learned a whole new language, “sweet’n tart, “give me a twist” and some I can’t repeat... I learned it was okay to take a garden hose and turn it on and aim it in through a door or window... I learned that a leftover night’s dinner would be incorporated into the next meal... I learned that awakening to Red Red Robin was better than any alarm... I learned that no matter your voice, you were encouraged to sing... I learned that fork-throwing at the dinner table was an art form... I learned that all were welcome at the table for dinner... I learned that all were welcome at the cabin at Clear Lake and we could always squeeze in one more.... I learned not to let Pop barbeque.... I learned that the Hogan Christmas Party was a much anticipated event of the season by many..... ......now he is at rest and can sing loud and clear along with mom...🎶🎶 - Posted by: Kelly Greenaway (daughter-in-law) on: May 05, 2019

  • My sincere condolences to the Hogan family. I met Chappie about 3-4 years ago when he came to Kelly's place from the Island. Not a visit went by that he didn't sing his good oldies songs. He was infectious to watch. He was loved and will be sadly missed. RIP CHAPPIE! - Posted by: Donna McGown (Daughter's friend) on: May 04, 2019

  • Chappie walked into my coffee shop in 2006. We became fast friends. We went on all sorts of adventures and enjoyed our time together. He had a tremendous wit and we laughed often. He has been my BFF and great joy in my life for 13 years. I shall miss you my dear friend. Love you Chappie. You are with the angels now and Donna... - Posted by: Carole (Dear friend ) on: May 04, 2019
