SHIGEYUKI (SHIG) KUWADA
He was born in Tashme, British Columbia in a Japanese internment camp on October 29, 1942 to Hisao "Henry" and Toki Kuwada. His three sisters, Atsumi, Naomi and Terumi were guiding forces throughout his life. Shig grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he met Blanche, his wife of over 51 years. After earning his Ph.D., he spent the early formative years of his career at the University of Wisconsin. He settled in Connecticut where he and Blanche raised their three sons, Tim, Jud and Clinton "Casey" and was a distinguished Professor at the UConn School of Medicine in the field of auditory physiology. He was known for his laid back style and laugh, but also for his exacting work ethic, unwavering principle and brutal honesty. Shig loved his daughters-in-law, Karen and Rachel and his grandchildren, Maddie, Stella, Lucy, Tyler, Caden, Leah, Peyton and Tucker. Shig had a thirst for knowledge and was a student of life. He was a "jack of all trades" with an impressive range of knowledge and talents. He was usually right, but never in doubt! A master fine woodworker, his innumerable masterpieces decorate the homes of family and friends around the world. Shig will be remembered for his Ramen noodles and love for his family, cigars, drums and poker.
The family would like to thank Dr. Timothy Hong, Tiffany Wood, RN and the hospice team for their excellent and compassionate care.

After reading Barney Smyrl's obit in yesterday's paper (Dec 31, 2022) I was motivated to look for Shig & Trosky. I don't know how I missed Shig's obit in 2019. Shiggy was classy & funny. He was the life of beach & house parties. I dug through my treasures and found a letter that Shiggy sent to my friend Linda & I when we were in Europe, March 1966. He wrote two pages, with fine neat penmanship, full of wit & humour. What a guy! I assume Tommy is the last of the 3 amigos. Great memories of youthful days! (Sadly, Linda died at the age of 37 in 1981.) Belated condolences to the Kuwada family. - Posted by: Myrna (Schultz) McGregor, White Rock, BC (Beach buddy) on: Jan 01, 2023

Shig and I taught together from 1972-74 at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. We became friends late at night in the psychology building while we stayed up preparing lectures when we were not philosophizing. I really liked and admired him for his humor, generosity and brilliance. He often invited me over to his family home when I was single and I treasure a few photos of him and his wife from a long time ago when we were just starting out. - Posted by: Steve Cummings (Friend and colleague) on: Jun 06, 2019

Just heard the news of your brothers passing. My condolences go out to the entire family during this difficult time. I remember Shig playing football with my father and Shig's friends out front of our house. My Dad only had 2 daughters so he used to enjoy spending time playing football with the boys. I also remember how he used to torment me over the back fence; you were never quite sure how to take him. All in good fun. Hang on to all your memories. I will keep you all in my prayers. May he rest in peace. Christine McKenzie - Posted by: christine McKenzie (Former neighbor in Winnipeg) on: May 19, 2019
