SAUL SCOTT

Saul Scott died peacefully at the age of 95, at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg on May 31, 2019.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to Ida and Nathan Scott, he spent his formative years in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He served in the US Army during the Second World War as a navigation instructor. After the war, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Newark Institute of Technology. He began his career in the garment industry as a consultant at the Morgan Shirt Company in Morgantown, West Virginia.
In 1956, Saul moved to Winnipeg to work at Monarch Wear. In 1968, he established Wescott Fashions with Eddie Silver. At its peak, the company had 800 employees with factories in Winnipeg and Saskatoon.
Saul married Sylvia Kettner in 1969 and adopted her daughters Laurie, Terri and Maureen. Shortly after, Nancy was born in 1971 and Bryan was born in 1974. He took great joy in his children and grandchildren. Saul was a devoted husband, particularly during Sylvia's long illness. During his retirement, Saul and Sylvia spent their winters in Rancho Mirage, California where they enjoyed playing golf and socializing with their many friends.
Saul served his community in many ways, including as president of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Manitoba and as a volunteer with the United Jewish Appeal. He was known for his keen intelligence, and was a gifted athlete. He pioneered the condo renaissance of Winnipeg's Exchange District by converting the historic Ashdown Warehouse to condominiums in 1986.
Saul was predeceased by his parents, Ida and Nathan, siblings, Felix (Marilyn), Frances, and wife Sylvia (2013). He is survived by children, Laurie (Jeff), Terri (Ian), Maureen (Colin), Nancy (Marty), Bryan (Jennifer), and grandchildren, Jesse, Ben (Samantha), Jami (Brian), Shai and Sadie.
Special thanks to the caring staff at the Grace Hospital and the Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba will be gratefully accepted.
A graveside service was held on June 3, 1:00 p.m., at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, Section 3J.
