TROY HOWARD FONTAINE
July 20, 1968 - July 29, 2019
Troy's spirit will live on in his best friend and wife, Heather (nee Ramsay); his children, Josephine, Ella and Robert; his mother Aline (Fenez); and his siblings, Debbie (Chris), Craig (Joanne), Dan (Liza); nieces and nephews, family, friends and his Turtle Lodge ceremonial family.
He was predeceased by his father Howard in October 2018.
We are broken hearted but have comfort in knowing that no one would be happier and more at home in the Spirit World than Troy.
Troy was a kind, humble and funny man. He loved to joke and tease, listen to music, cook and bake and be at home with his family. He was a wonderful husband and father and so proud of the life that he and Heather had created together. Troy loved to be outside and was deeply connected to the Earth. He was a gifted artist, creating many soapstone, antler and snow carvings. He was proud of his culture and walked a traditional path. He dedicated himself to helping children and youth teaching them the traditional ways. Troy was and will remain in spirit and integral part of the Turtle Lodge in Sagkeeng. He was happiest walking through the bush, picking medicine, fishing, swimming at Sioux Narrows with his family and in ceremonies.
Troy worked at Knowles Centre for many years as a Cultural Care Coordinator leaving this past fall for the opportunity to work at the Giigewigamig Healing Lodge in Pine Falls Hospital. He was grateful to be able to use his gifts and knowledge to help bring spirit into a place of healing.
A service will be held Tuesday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk.
Flowers are gratefully declined, but should friends desire contributions in support of his children may be directed to "Fontaine Family Trust" at Cambrian Credit Unions.
The family wishes to express our gratitude to the paramedics, 911 operator and RCMP who attended to Troy with compassion, respect and kindness. We are forever grateful to our family, friends, our community, our Turtle Lodge family and Fire Keepers for the outpouring of love, support and ceremonies to honour Troy.

Troy had helped me and my late sister. He showed us ceremony while being in Knowles, that helped us a lot he was always trying to keep us youth together and always would take us to Sagkeeng for ceremony he always talked about his family and showed us drawings his kids made him. He told us funny stories and a lot of wisdom stories. Troy was a huge part of me and my sisters life. He is a good man who loved his family and the youth he had worked with. Truly and deeply sorry for his family's loss. - Posted by: Jessica (Youth he helped ) on: Jul 12, 2022

My thoughts are with his family and community. I knew Troy as a young person, sat with him almost every morning through junior high. Kind and funny is what I remember, and his smile. When I read a few years ago that he was a pipe carver, it made sense to me that he would be given that gift. The gifts that he made with his hands will continue to heal for generations. - Posted by: Lisa (Feyereisen) Goss (School friend ) on: Aug 03, 2019

I was very saddened to hear of his passing, my family on my mothers side remembered him as we were neighbours in a small community called O Zah We Kwun. (near Rivers, MB) He remained my friend for many years, even though i never seen him that much, we always stayed in contact. He was a kind and gentle soul.....now he walks with the old ones...... - Posted by: Marvin Pe (Childhood friend) on: Aug 01, 2019

Troy was one of our guides during the Mysteries of Winnipeg tour in June. He was one of the gentle souls I've been privileged to encounter. He taught us a lot in an incredibly short time. I thought our paths would cross again, maybe, next year. Now we'll wait until 'next time.' I will look for him. My heart is with Troy's family. - Posted by: Daniel (Friend) on: Aug 01, 2019
