ROLAND VALCOURT

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Roland Valcourt on Monday, September 9, 2019 at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface, aged 93 years.
Roland will be mourned and deeply missed by his wife, Lucette (Carroll), his children, Carole (Barrie Kreitz), Robert (Yolande Lafond), Jocelyne (Noel Currie) and Lynne; his grandchildren, Kellie, Lisa, Raymond, Janelle, Taylor and Morgan, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Roland was born and raised his family in St. Jean-Baptiste, MB where he owned and operated a lumber sales and home construction business. After closing down his business, he became town postmaster from which he retired after 25 years of service. A longtime Knight of Columbus, Roland was also a Second World War veteran and proud member of the local legion. Roland was also one of the founding members of the local volunteer fire brigade. Roland dedicated many years of public service as municipal councillor, school bus driver, as well as caller for the local bingo fundraiser. He was an avid sportsman throughout his life having played very competitive hockey and baseball, which led to a number of provincial championships. He also enjoyed fishing, curling, and golfing which he played well into his 80s. Roland also played a mean game of billiards. In his later years in Winnipeg he really enjoyed visits to the local legion for a few beers and games of pool with son Robert and numerous friends. Roland also greatly enjoyed raising and tending to his horses, as well as a few chickens and rabbits in his backyard.
What was most outstanding about 'Rolly' was his "joie de vivre", his perpetual smile and his genuine kindness to all family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all.
The family would like to thank the staff at Actionmarguerite St. Vital and St. Boniface for their loving and compassionate care of our dad.
A private celebration of his life will be held by immediate family members.

  • Our sincere condolences to Auntie Lucette and to all the family. Uncle Rolly was not only the greatest uncle but my godfather as well. I have fond memories from the age of four or five when Auntie Lucette and Uncle Rolly took me to the Shrine Circus in Winnipeg for my birthday. He would also often take me to town for special treats and left me feeling like a little Prince. He was very popular in St. Jean and I got to know him and get close to him over the years through celebrations, parties as well as working with him on construction sites and at the lumber yard, not to mention babysitting his rascals. As a hockey coach he was very competitive and No!, I didn’t get any extra ice time as I wasn’t that good a player. The last time I spoke with Uncle Rolly on the phone a few months ago where he sang with a clear loud voice, “Happy Trails to you, until we meet again”. Auntie Lucette, Julie, Robert and Yolande were there to cheer him on. He always had that special smile and quick wit. A bit of a joker at times - as an example, when visiting he would drop his empty beer on the ground and say “whoops, good thing it was empty”, hinting he was ready for another. Had lots of fun golfing in Morris, admiring his straight drive down the middle as well as his magic big headed putter. Again our sincere condolences. Hope you find some comfort in knowing he is at peace and touched the lives of so many. He will remain in our hearts forever. Big hug Auntie Lucette, Love Marcel, Verna and families - Posted by: Marcel & Verna Baril (Godson and nephew) on: Sep 22, 2019

  • My sincere condolences to all the family, you were the best neighbors one could ask for. I have so many fond memories of Mr Valcourt picking us up in the school bus on blustery winter days, riding the horse, visiting him at the lumberyard, and of course he always had that wonderful smile. My heart goes out to you, he was a beautiful, caring man who will be greatly missed. - Posted by: camille st arnaud (neighbor) on: Sep 19, 2019

  • I was next-door neighbour to Roland as I was growing up in St—Jean. Ti-Roule, as he was fondly called then, always had a smile and a kind word as myself and Robert played around together. I remember many times stopping by the lumber yard with him in the front office and he was always welcoming, and happy to give us a couple of pencils and notepads that seemed like a present every time. As a neighbour, you could not ask for better as he and Lucette were always very welcoming when we came over to play. The house and yard were always neatly kept and he loved nurturing his trees and garden. He always seemed happy to see us, no matter the time of day. Fond memories of a wonderful man with a big heart. - Posted by: Roland Bérard (Neighbour for many years as I was growing up in St-Jean) on: Sep 14, 2019

As with Richard, I too have many great memories of him. I remember one particular time when I got a ride with him to the Morris Stampede, where I was selling tickets and making a little bit of pocket money. He was so nice and pleasant to be around. It's quite clear from reading his obituary that he was a man of many talents and interests and that he touched many lives. Even after moving away from St. Jean, my husband Gilles and I had the opportunity to visit with M. and Mme Valcourt. We were always so well received. - Posted by: Raymonde Dupuis (friend) on: Sep 13, 2019

  • I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the Valcourt family. I have some very fond memories of Roland having grown up on the same street in St. Jean. I have often thought of your dad as an uncle and remember, with fondness, the many good times we had together. I remember when he was the umpire at many of our fastball games and how he would always look at me with his smile when I did not swing at a good ball that he would thereafter call a strike or worse when I swung at an ugly pitch that he would never call a strike, the constant being that smile....I will always remember that smile. Please be comforted in the fact that he had a good life and was able to spend many years with his loved ones and numerous, numerous friends. - Posted by: Richard Valcourt (Cousin) on: Sep 12, 2019

  • Rollie was a true gentleman who will be missed by many. We have such fond memories of Rollie as a school bus driver for so many years, and as our postmaster who we always looked forward to visiting with each time we picked up the mail. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. Our sympathies to the Valcourt and extended families and all who knew him. - Posted by: Randy & Anne Manikel (Friend) on: Sep 12, 2019

  • So loved this man! Always a contagious smile and kind words. Often found an excuse to pop open the post office door just to say hi! Gilbert remembers going into the Post Office just to see his Montreal Canadiens calendars and chatting him up about that. Sincere condolences to the family. Rolly was truly one-of-kind! - Posted by: Gilbert & Mona Lavallee (Friend ) on: Sep 12, 2019

  • Our sincere sympathies to the Valcourt family! We have such fond memories of Roland, a loving, caring, gentle, affectionate man with a heart of gold. Many cherished childhood memories were spent at their home in St Jean growing up with his daughter Lynne❤️ Since they moved to Winnipeg years ago, my husband and I thought of him and Lucette often. He was that man; a man that entered peoples hearts.....and stayed there! Hugs to everyone 🙏🏻❤️ - Posted by: Nicole & Peener Bissonnette (friends) on: Sep 12, 2019
