VI LEANEY
October 14, 1927 - October 13, 2019
Airi Guinilla Violet Leaney will be missed by her children, Lesley (Fred), Scott (Bernie) and Christine (Hugh), grandchildren, Kyle (Madison), Austin and Marnie (Preston); and sister-in-law Barbara McLenaghen, her children, Jim, John and Joanne and their families.
Vi was born to Walteri and Airi Metsala in Port Arthur, now Thunder Bay, and was proud of her Finnish roots. She met Don on the ski slopes and they were married in 1952, moved to Winnipeg in 1954 and enjoyed 49 wonderful years together. Mom and Dad passed on their love of skiing and we enjoyed many family ski trips to Thunder Bay, Minnesota and Banff. Clearwater Bay was a very special place where family and friends came together to spend quality time. Mom loved all animals, we always had dogs and latterly she had her faithful companion Callie the cat. She loved being a stay at home Mom and when she wasn't cooking, sewing or knitting for us she was volunteering, playing bridge or curling. Every morning you could find Mom at aquasizes at the Winter Club until she couldn't manage the stairs, then she became a regular at Margaret Grant pool. Mom took her exercising very seriously and also her volunteering. She was a long-time member of the Junior League where she was a puppeteer and even made the puppets, worked at the Nearly New Shop run by the McKinnon Guild for over 40 years and ran the Raven's Nest at her grandsons' school for many years, just to name a few of her volunteer activities. She was an honorary lifetime member of the SJR Parents Association and a dedicated fan for many years at her grandson's hockey and ultimate games. Mom and Dad loved to travel, they made trips to Europe, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean and enjoyed many years at Marco Island. Mom was a voracious reader of history and biographies. She was a famously feisty lady right to the end.
The Canoe Club was home for the last three years and everyone there was fabulous. Thank you to Dr. Brian Sharkey for his incredible care and compassion, he made numerous house calls, phone calls and texts while looking after Mom.
Cremation has taken place and we will spread her ashes at the family cottage at Woodchuck Bay where she will join Dad. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Winnipeg Squash Club, 275 Stradbrook Avenue, on Friday, November 29 at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Vi may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.

To the family and loved ones of Vi .... your mother was a dear friend of my mother's - Barb Eastwood. When my Mother passed away in 2008, I was tasked with ensuring all of her loved assets were taken care of. Well, that included Callie, the most wondrous companion my Mother had, and I was not in a position to keep her. I can remember the day when I asked Vi to look after Callie, as I was going away on a trip. My daughter and I brought her over to your Mother's home on Thatcher (?), and it was a match in heaven! I was so at peace where Callie ended up and hope that they both comforted each other. Hugs to the entire Lainey family, from the Eastwoods. - Posted by: Karen Eastwood (Family Friend) on: Nov 26, 2019

Thinking of you all at this very sad time, with our sincere condolences on your family's loss. While it has been many years since we have seen Vi, we have so many great memories of times our families spent together in the past. May your memories bring you peace and comfort and may she RIP together with her chosen once again.
