GEORGE MACDONALD

On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, George passed away, peacefully at home, at the age of 89 years.
Remaining to cherish George's memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Phyllis, and children, David and Cynthia (Robert) Singer. He also leaves his brother-in-law John Harrington and family; "Windsor Cousins", John George MacDonald, Anne Handy, Heather Higginbottom (Sam) and their families.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Isabella MacDonald, and his sister Heather. He was also predeceased by his brother-in-law William Harrington (Vivian), sister-in-law Joanne Harrington, nephew Jason Killick, uncle Don MacDonald (Margaret), aunt Katy Ann MacDonald (John), cousins, James MacDonald, Archibald MacDonald (Alexis) and Catherine Kellington (Renee).
From his teen years on, George was almost unimaginably driven. For virtually all of his adult working life, he held two jobs. He began as a theatre projectionist at the age of 18, and continued to hold that position, even as he joined the Technical staff of CBC Manitoba at the very dawn of the television age in the 1950s. He held both jobs, simultaneously, for over 40 years. Of the hundreds of CBC productions that he was involved with, he considered his assignment to the 1976 Montreal Olympics to be a highlight of his career, as well as his stint of several years as "Behind-the-Glass-George" on the "Northern Manitoba Morning Show". He also somehow found the time to establish his own video business. His remembrances of working as a projectionist in Winnipeg's cinemas from the late 1940s on can be found in Russ Gourluck's recent book, "Silver Screens of the Prairies."
Of all of his accomplishments, George was most proud of the "Certificate of Appreciation" that he received in 1976 from the Winnipeg Police Service, for the part he played in foiling an armed robbery in progress.
George enjoyed spending time with his family, loved music, and had a beautiful singing voice. He was also a talented artist, drawing and painting just as well with his left hand as his right. Any spare time was devoted to his fanatical love of boxing, which he shared with several of his cronies, especially fellow fanatic Val.
George loved meeting new people, and in his retirement he travelled, together with Phyllis, throughout North America, the Caribbean and the British Isles. He also loved animals, especially his beloved Doberman Pinscher Hailey, and 'foster Dobie' Mindy.
On Saturday, November 30, 2019 George's funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue with Rev. Liz Richens presider. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to the service at 12:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba would be greatly appreciated.
