GEORGINA (GINA) ANNE SMITH
March 16, 1939 - December 23, 2019

Gina was born in Winnipeg to George and Anne Maryk, and will be deeply missed by her husband of 61 years, Dave and their
children, Wayne (Jacquie), Debbie Dierckens (Bill) and Judy Helbig (Paul) and six
grandchildren, Laura Smith, Sara Allard (Coard), Lisa Smith, Daryl and Karl
Dierckens and Quinn Helbig, sister-in-law
Rosemary Murphy, step-grandchildren,
Aimee (Kevin), Tracy (Dave), Brett (Melissa) and step-great-grandchildren, Lachlan, Emerald, and Kingston, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents and grandson Logan.
Gina and Dave became high school
sweethearts in 1954 and were married in
November, 1958. During Dave's 35 year
banking career they lived in four western provinces and moved nineteen times. Gina was a stay at home mom and developed many hobbies to keep her busy including knitting, crocheting, macramé and pottery among
others. She also spent a few weeks each
summer helping her parents at Tall Timber Lodge during peak periods which included cooking, serving, transporting fishermen to and from Winnipeg, storekeeping, purchasing and hauling supplies and whatever else was required. During winter periods, she
managed the mail and reservations, etc. while her parents were working the sports shows. In later years she volunteered at CancerCare in Edmonton for 1932 hours over four years. She started as a driver transporting patients to and from the clinic for treatments, and
later helped out in the gift shop where the
operators quickly realized she was a very adept businesswoman and put her in charge of purchasing. She still had extra time
available and made hundreds of dozens of muffins at home for sale in the gift shop to further enhance profits.
She loved cooking, baking, travelling and camping and trailered throughout North America ultimately spending some 27 winters in the south. Gina was known to be a very down to earth person with a friendly
personality and unique ability for meeting strangers, as well as a natural talent for
communicating with young children. Her
generosity in frequently sharing cooking treats with anyone around, along with her friendly manner and sense of humour,
cemented many long-term friendships.
The family wishes to thank the Palliative Home Care team and the 3East - Riverview unit for their compassionate care and also Dr. Vivian Gerges for her special care and
service above and beyond the norm and who also became a good friend.
A Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will be held January 9, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parish of St. Timothy, 135 John Forsyth Rd., Winnipeg.
Anyone wishing to make donations in lieu of flowers, may do so to the ALS Society of Manitoba, 2A - 1717 Dublin Ave. Winnipeg, R3H 0H2 in her memory.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I worked at Tall Timber Lodge from 1994 to 1998. The Smith Family was always giving, compassionate and interesting. Michele and I were honoured when Wayne asked us to look after his children when he went on a motorcycle vacation. We accepted knowing Georgina and Dave were close by. It was a fun two weeks with the kids, but that is another story. Georgina was indeed a great cook and many of us who worked there enjoyed her culinary talents. Georgina had a presence. She was always quietly in command. It was a joy to be part of Tall Timber Lodge family. Condolences to all. - Posted by: Leslie Hemphill (Employee, friend and had a nip or two together.) on: Feb 19, 2021

  • We were lucky enough to meet Gina and Dave 14 years ago when we moved to the same neighbourhood. Gina had such a wonderful sense of humour and always enjoyed a good laugh. It did not take long to realize how generous and kind Gina was to everyone she met. We would like to send our condolences to Dave and family. She will be missed by many. - Posted by: Grant and Maria (friends and neighbours) on: Jan 05, 2020

  • Long time friends. - Posted by: donald land (friend of family) on: Jan 04, 2020

  • A very good cook indeed. We still remember Gina's delicious cabbage rolls! Gina was always warm and welcoming as well as being a no-nonsense gal, we appreciated those qualities. We think about Tall Timber often and the fond memories of Gina, Dave, Wayne and the girls always make us smile. Our most sincere condolences. - Posted by: Leslie & Michele (worked at Tall Timber Lodge) on: Jan 04, 2020
