PETER J. SAWCHUK
May 21, 1929 – February 4, 2020

Peter was dad to Carol, Lynne and Diana; Gigi to Mack and Ben; husband to Shirley; and brother to Junie, his last surviving sibling.
Pete and Shirley were married for 67 years and resided in St. Vital.
Dad was born in Winnipeg and grew up in the city's North End. He participated in multiple sports, especially active within the football community. He was competitive in football, hockey, soccer, baseball, curling and racquetball. As a football player, coach and leader he was the recipient of numerous awards. Peter was inducted into the Football Manitoba Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2011, then in 2013 (Football Manitoba Hall of Fame) and 2015 (Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame) in the Team category as an assistant coach and player for the 1954 Canadian Intermediate Football Champions, the Winnipeg Rams.
Peter initiated and coordinated the formation of the Manitoba Junior Football Conference, and was the league's first President. Later, in retirement, he became the Commissioner of the Canadian Junior Football League.
In 2012, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, awarded for his outstanding and exemplary contributions to his community.
Professionally, he was employed at the Monarch Life Assurance Company for 38 years, retiring as the Director of Information Systems. His talents, organizational skills, leadership qualities, and his ability to motivate and work with people, won Peter the respect and friendship of his co-workers at all levels.
In retirement, Dad enjoyed his morning swims at the YMCA, golf at Niakwa Golf and Country Club, and coffee with lively, occasionally argumentative discussions and camaraderie at the Red Top Restaurant.
Friends and family are invited to Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Mary's Rd., on Saturday, April 25, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., to celebrate Dad's life.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or Golden Links Lodge.
A special thank you to the staff at Golden Links Lodge for their sincere and compassionate care. Dad maintained a sense of humour and social consciousness with a friendly nature that endeared him to those who loved and cared for him.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds
are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of playing for the St. Boniface Broncs with Coach Sawchuk. We then tied up again as work colleagues when we travelled to Insurance IT conferences together and later played golf at Niakwa. Pete was a born leader and an excellent football coach. He positively impacted generations of young players and employees. RIP Coach - Posted by: Roy Grant (Player, work colleague, golf partner) on: Feb 08, 2020

  • I was truly blessed having been able to know and care for Peter over the last years of his life. Peter was a kind and thoughtful man who loved to converse with the people around him, and his sense of humour was a true gift that made us laugh and smile. He would often spend time awake in the wee hours, visiting with staff and having a snack, and he definitely enjoyed the company of others. A social butterfly of sorts. Peter is at peace now, and its his family and those that loved him that are left to grieve. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He was a very lucky man to have such love from his family, and he will always be remembered thru that love. - Posted by: Maureen Willcox (RN caregiver) on: Feb 08, 2020
