RICK WEST

It is with great sadness, much love and a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our beloved Rick, who passed away peacefully with Valerie, Wayne, Gerry and Roger by his side, on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at the Grace Hospital.
Rick was born September 29, 1947 and lived in the Norwood Flats until his family moved to Victoria, BC, eventually returning to Winnipeg a short time later. Rick and Valerie were married June 16, 1973 and moved to the Norwood Flats in 1979, a neighbourhood they both loved.
Rick start working with Dents Sausage in 1964 as a truck driver, left a few times, and eventually returned to work as a sales representative. In 1991, he became a partner in HMS Foods Ltd./Dents Sausage. He later bought out his partners, Roger Fontaine and Margaret Stewart and ran his much-loved company until he became ill. Over the years, Rick's customers became his friends.
Rick was predeceased by his mother and father, Dorothy and Colin West; his in-laws, who became his second set of parents, George and Florence Sul; his brothers, Doug and Allen; sisters, Patty and Betty; and nephews, Jimmy Lounsbury and Dougie West. He is survived by the love of his life and best friend, Valerie; brother Bob; sister Kathy (Jim) Lounsbury; brother-in-law Cliff Neiser; sister-in-law Shirley West, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, many good friends and "Fake Family".
A special thank you to the Intensive Care Unit at the Grace Hospital, Dr. Ball and Dr. Eshun, and to Wayne who was like a son to Rick and took care of HMS meats when Rick became ill. Also, thank you to Barb and Bruce, Gerry and Wendy, Jeannette and Artie, Karen, Debbie, and many more, too numerous to mention, for all the love, support and help.
In keeping with Rick's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in Holy Family Church, 778 Archibald Street.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Rick may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association, 204-825 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5.

  • I met Rick and Val through my mom at Tache, they were a couple that after meeting them once it felt like you’ve known them both forever. Rick would specially deliver our meat order to my mom at the house cause she was a special lady, an angel he would say. My heart hurts for you Val, the love you and Rick shared is something you don’t see to often... I appreciate the kindness you both shared to me after my moms passing, Rick always asking me how I was doing whenever I seen him and offer any help I needed , with his connections seeing he knew a lot of people... I would see Rick often at the Tims on Archibald when I would get my morning coffee before work, glad I stopped in to see him one of the last times I had gone as he was parked in the Coop parking lot , before they put the fence up,with his coffee buddies all in their trucks. Thanks for being such a kind caring man Rick, you definately have touched the souls of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting you .. Thoughts and prayers go to you Val to help you through this difficult time.. much love to you both ❤️❤️❤️ - Posted by: Brenda Lorteau (Angela’s daughter) on: Feb 14, 2020

  • I first met Rick at Coopers Shell on Broadway and Sherbrooke. We used to met there, I think he worked part time because he was always there. I used to go down and wash my car and wash his car and sit and talk for hours while they dried off. As life goes on I met Rick again a couple of years later and a bunch of us used to met at the Redtop on St. Marys road for coffee every morning. Rick was a people guy, if you knew him you loved him and you had respect for him as he did for you. I could go on, but I just want to say that, I will miss you take care my friend. - Posted by: Geno (friend) on: Feb 13, 2020

We enjoyed many summer evenings hanging out on Rick and Valerie’s deck listening to his stories. He was a very kind man and we will miss him. - Posted by: Rhonda,Brock, Chantal & Jackson (Friends) on: Feb 12, 2020

  • I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Rick. Rick had an "open door" policy and every time I stopped by to visit my brother Wayne, Rick and I always had a chat. Rick was very much loved by my brother Wayne and his family and I know that was mutual! On behalf of my son Matthew, who also worked at HMS Foods, we send our sincerest condolences to Rick's family, friends, the HMS Foods staff and to my brother Wayne. • Rick, Roger and I worked at Dent's in the mid sixties. He was a lot of fun to work with. We were all drivers for Dent's at that time. When I left, Rick and Roger stayed behind. They eventually bought out other partners and ran the company, now known as HMS, with Roger and Margaret. The team maintained the Dent's label for some of their products. Who of us in our 70's don't remember the little white trucks with a giant pig on the side. Rick maintained the quality of his products. We have friends who will go out of their way to pick up Dent's sausage chubs to take to relatives in other provinces. You can not make a proper stuffing without that stuff. It's like crack cocaine. Rick's commitment to his suppliers, customers and staff can not be questioned. Whenever you visited his plant, he always had time to reminisce and laugh about the old days. Val and family, please know that Rick is much loved and will be missed. - Posted by: Denis and Ruth Jeanson (Long time friend) on: Feb 12, 2020

  • I was so sad to hear about Rick's passing. I will always fondly remember joking around with him whenever I'd see him at the Norwood. He would ask us girls if we knew what HMS stood for and when we said no he'd tell us it stood for horny meat salesman. Haha. He had a great sense of humour and always made us smile and laugh when we saw him. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Jacqueline Bird (Friend/server at the Norwood) on: Feb 11, 2020
