JOHN EDWARD (TED) OAKLEY
July 16, 1934 - February 12, 2020

Peacefully and unexpectedly, after a short battle with cancer, we lost an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Dad, you gave us more than a family could expect. You gave us undivided love, you did not judge us through our ups and downs. We always knew you were there for us.
You leave behind your loving wife Gerri, of 63 years, you tended to her care the last few years showing unconditional love. She will miss you. You truly will be missed by your children: Dawn, Clint (Susan), Gary (Monique), Chris (Linda), Tom (Jane) and Jennifer (Jason); grandchildren: Sarah (Travis), Jessica (Kyle), Ted (Amy), Jamie (Tyree), Christine, Jenna, Tehgan, Samantha, Troy, Shane, Trevor, Aryn, Mya, Kara (Josh) and Katlyn; great-grandchildren: Nixon and Ayla; sister, Lynne (Les), sisters-in-law: Rita (Garrie), Lenore and Pat (Al); brother-in-law Doug (Janice), and numerous nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his mother Bertha, father Alfred, brother Donald, sister-in-law Jeanine, mother and father-in-law, George and Helen Foley, and brother-in-law John Foley.
Ted and Gerri bought their permanent home on Harold Avenue in Transcona in 1963, where they lived until health issues made it necessary to move into Devonshire House. It was a home full of love and memories. Ted was a very hard worker, working his way up and becoming branch manager at W. G. McMahon Canada. He retired in 1993.
Dad had a huge passion for sports, especially hockey and golf. He enjoyed watching his sons, granddaughters and grandsons play. He loved to watch the Jets and showed much frustration when they did not play well. He was an avid golfer, a member at the Transcona Golf Course for many years where he played every weekday morning with his group of golfing buddies. Dad and Mom spent many summers at their cottage in Victoria Beach where he shared so many good times with his family and friends. Every event deserved a party. It was his happy place.
We wish to thank everyone for your kindness and support in helping us get through this difficult time. A special thank you to his friends and staff at Devonshire House. Thank you for keeping an eye on him for us. We truly appreciate it.
A celebration of our dad's (Ted's) life will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the Transcona Golf Club, 2120 Dugald Road, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.
Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, a donation may be made in Dad's honour to a charity of your choice.

  • Our deepest sympathy in the loss of your dear husband father father in law and grandfather. Your dad was an awesome father and husband. Being a neighbor I always remember him with a smile and just being an awesome man. Dedicated to his family. He will always have that special place in your hearts to keep his memory. Condolences to all!! - Posted by: Carol & Glenn Chudley (Neighbor) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • Ted coached Clint and myself in Little League baseball back in the 1960's and I still remember how he was always a positive influence and encouraged all of us. He was one of several fathers who supported sports in Transcona for their kids. His contribution to the community has instilled the same spirit in everyone he met and will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Robert Kotchon (family friend) on: Feb 20, 2020

  • I am writing this on behalf of my mum, Sheila Wolfe, who was so very sad to learn of Ted's passing. They shared many conversations and laughs over sports, particularly the Jets and Raptors. Always meeting in the hallway on their 3rd floor, Ted was always the gentleman, ready to push Sheila in her chair when needed. He has truly left a void in her daily routine, he will be missed by myself and Sheila. - Posted by: Catherine Wilde (friend) on: Feb 19, 2020

  • Ted and I had many good times when we sat together at meal times in Devonshire House. Heavy discussions over hockey and other sports took place, nevertheless we always remained friends. We had something in common because each of our wives were in Care Homes. I will certainly miss Ted as will his other friends here at Devonshire House. My condolences to all of the family. • We are so sorry to hear about your dad’s unexpected passing. Rob was remembering all the junior hockey games that your dad came to watch... preferring to stand alone so he could focus on the action. And how he continued to enjoy being at the rink, even when the “action” became old-timer leagues. Your lives and personalities so clearly exemplify the guidance, strength, and love that he shared with family and friends. Sending our deepest sympathy and love. - Posted by: Rob & Cindy Paulsen (Family Friends) on: Feb 19, 2020

  • To the entire Oakley family, we offer our utmost condolences. The world was a better place because Mr. Oakley was in it. On the occasions I had to chat with him, well, he always brought a smile to my face. He was kind and funny. He left this world far too soon and he will be missed. My wish is that he is sitting at the 19th hole up in heaven regaling about his life on earth. Our deepest sympathy.
