C. MALCOLM WRIGHT
August 10, 1935 - February 19, 2020
Malcolm was born in Wolverhampton, England in 1935 and immigrated with his family to Kingston, Ontario in 1949. He attended Queen's University where he graduated with a BSc (1957) and MSc (1958) in Geological Engineering. From Kingston he went to Madison, Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin where he graduated with a PhD (1961) in Economic Geology and Mining Engineering.
Beginning in 1961 he worked five years in Peru for Cerro de Pasco Corporation where he served as Chief Mine Geologist at two of Cerro's mines and subsequently set up a Geophysical and Geochemical Department for mining exploration throughout Peru. While serving as Chief Mine Geologist at the Morococho Mine he initiated exploration of the Toromocho deposit which has since become a world-class copper mine, Peru's largest copper mine and one of the highest mines in the world at an elevation of 16,000 feet above sea level. In 1966 he joined Kennecott Copper Corporation in Salt Lake City.
In 1968 Malcolm rejoined the Cerro organization and headed up mining exploration staff working in the Central United States with side assignments in Taiwan, South Korea and the Philippines.
In 1971 he became a founding member of Manitoba Mineral Resources Ltd. where he served successively as Chief Geologist, Vice President, President and a Director before its sale to Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company in 1994. During that time he also served as a Director of Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada. Manitoba Mineral started several joint venture exploration projects in Manitoba with Canadian companies and companies from Australia, England, France, Finland, South Africa, Sweden and the U.S.A. The Trout Lake Mine was the second largest mine in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area and Malcolm was a member of the Joint Venturers Committee that oversaw the operation. The company discovered a small gold deposit (Farley Lake) east of Lynn Lake that has since been mined out.
Apart from some consulting work, Malcolm retired in 1992 when it became apparent the demands of his job, which he enjoyed immensely, were preventing him from pursuing his "bucket list". The "bucket list" included travel, camping, fishing, investment management, courses in computer maintenance and repair, computer programs, digital photography, furniture refinishing, curling, golfing, gardening, home renovations and automobile repair.
After retirement he served for two years on the boards of Manitoba Mineral Resources Ltd. and the Winnipeg branch of Habitat for Humanity. Malcolm and the love of his life, Millie, worked on the "bucket list" with great enthusiasm and satisfaction and enjoyed a wonderful retirement together.
Apart from Millie, Malcolm leaves behind two sons, Ralph (Adrienne) and Scott, stepdaughter Janice (Roydon), and grandchildren, Erica, Brent, Ciara and Emmet. Malcolm was predeceased by his mother Rose, father Charles, sister Jenny Fern, stepson Gord Jackson, and grandson Gearard Wright.
In keeping with Malcolm's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Malcolm may be made to D'Arcy's Animal Rescue Centre, 730B Century Street, Winnipeg, MB R3H 0M1 or the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3.

I am Yohana Rojas and my mother Claudiana Ricaldi used to work for him when he came to La Oroya, Junin, Peru. My mom used to look after his children and has nice memories of the time he and his wife Jaqueline gave her work. She's always talked about him but just today she told me his full name and I found this site. She recognized him immediately and cried her heart out at the knowledge of his passing away. She would like to send her love to Sharon, Alfred and Ralph (I'm sorry if I have misspelled the names) and tell them that both their parents were really kind and good-natured people. My mom remembers your mother used to sow her dresses and your father taught her Maths and Chemistry. They would never treat her as a maid but as family. We offer you our deepest condolences and hope you are in good health. From Lima, Peru. - Posted by: Claudiana Ricaldi (Former employee) on: Jul 15, 2020

Malcolm was a perfect gentlemen. He would go out of his way to help you if you needed it. I have known Malcolm for many years and his wife Millie. Millie and I took swimming lessons together at the Wildewood Club and then Malcolm helped us. We were both afraid of the water. We did learn how to swim. I went on a few trips with Millie and Malcolm. We had many great times together. Malcolm drove my niece Bonnie to her wedding many years ago. We will all miss him. We feel such a sense of loss in hearing of Malcom’s passing, the loss of a gentle man and a gentleman. His life achievements are a true measure of the respect he so deserved. We will always be thankful that he shared his many talents, especially the art of wine-making. We send sincere sympathy to you , Millie, JJ, and family.
