BILL RISTO
Mastocytosis.
Bill is survived by his wife Brenda (nee Durupt), children, Kyle (Jenn Risto) and Lindsay (Trent Adams), grandchildren, Bram and Isla, and his mother Evelyn.
Bill was a world traveller whose adventures with Brenda took them all over the world. Plane, train, automobile, or boat, it did not matter, Bill simply had a zest for exploring and seeing as much of the world as possible. He was also an avid Jets fan attending countless games with his wife and kids as season ticket holders.
The family sincerely thanks the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and the Health Sciences Centre for their care and treatment of Bill during his hospitalizations, as he bravely fought this rare blood disease. Despite a grim prognosis and many set-backs, Bill always expressed a positive mind-set and a strong will to beat this disease.
As well, the family expresses their thanks and appreciation to Bill's care team, who under the guidance of Dr. Donald Houston and Dr. Craig Speziali used their best efforts to combat this rare, unpredictable, and aggressive disease.
A Celebration of Life in Bill's honour will be held June 13, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill's name to CancerCare Manitoba, Health Sciences Centre, and Mastocytosis Society Canada.

Bill Risto was my friend. Our wives met at Winnipeg Hydro and we instantly connected. That was almost 40 years ago. We have spent countless hours sharing the good times. I can’t believe he is gone. That I will never again be able to shake his hand. It is gut wrenching. We bonded. It was more than friendship. Brenda called it a kinship. I am so sorry he is gone. All Bill ever wanted to do was retire, sit in the sun, and relax. God I miss him. - Posted by: Brad Weitzel (Life long friend) on: Mar 24, 2020

I remember Bill fondly from my childhood from the many sleepovers, birthday parties and hangouts I would have with Lindsay at the Risto home. He was always kind and caring, making me feel totally comfortable coming over to their place throughout the years. He always had a smile and encouraged us to call him Bill — not Mr. Risto. As we got older and I saw Lindsay and her family less often, Bill would still take a genuine interest in how I was doing and where life was taking me whenever I saw him. My heart breaks for all those close to Bill who are enduring the loss of a truly wonderful person. - Posted by: Megan Redmond (Friend of the family) on: Mar 18, 2020

I had the privilege of working with Bill when he was the Treasurer at the ELCIC. I found him to be a straight shooter, honest and genuine. I am saddened by his passing and offer my sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Joanne Martin (former co-worker) on: Mar 16, 2020

Very sad to hear of Bill's passing. My wife and I sat a few seats down from Bill and his wife Brenda (his family as well) for 9 years cheering on our Jets! He was a very passionate fan. He was always very friendly and never failed to say hello when meeting at the games. Our deepest condolences to Brenda and family. Bill was a friend from long ago. Our family all liked him and we had many good times at our cottage while he and my daughter were dating. Blessings to Bill’s Mother and Brenda and family. Bill was a wonderful colleague. As a new school principal, who did not come up through the ranks in the customary way, I did not have any experience managing a school budget. Bill sat down with me on more than one occasion to show me the ropes. He also provided feedback and coaching on an annual basis, after the « dust settled », so to speak. He was patient, friendly and, despite the fact that he was an accountant, he was a very good teacher. I will not forget his smile and his willingness to provide support where support was needed. I will miss him. Please accept my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Anna Zonneveld (Colleague ) on: Mar 15, 2020
