MARION (FERN) HANEY
(nee JOHNSTON)
March 5, 1937 - May 5, 2020
announce the passing of our mother and our dad's wife on Tuesday, May 5, 2020.
Mom will be deeply missed by her husband of 63 years, Roy, her son Brent (Carol), her daughter Kim (Ken), and her grandchildren, Connor, Caitlyn, Ryan, Quinn, Shawn and
Graham.
She was predeceased by her mother Vera, father Alex, and brother Keith.
Mom was born in the R.M. of Ellice, "on the farm" as she liked to tell it, to Alex and Vera Johnston. She spent her childhood, as most would in those days, going to school, working in the fields and playing ball. Mom loved to tell how well she could throw a ball! Keith passed away at the age of 21 years, and mom spoke lovingly of him many times over the years. As mom grew into a young woman she worked as a clerk "in town" at the local store.
Mom met dad in 1950 at a ball tournament, and they were married on October 6, 1957. Dad worked for Manitoba Hydro and in their early married years, they lived in over 100 communities in Manitoba, mostly in a trailer they pulled from town to town. Oh, how mom was proud to say that! Mom had many stories to tell over those moves!
Mom and dad settled in Gretna in 1966, and started their family soon after. Over the years in Gretna, mom participated in curling, golf, softball, and served on many of the
community boards and committees, including the curling club, tractor pull, and community centennial while working and raising two kids. Mom was an excellent curler, and spent many hours on the ice playing and coaching. Mom relinquished the skip role to her kids only once, and turned a teaching experience into a 3rd event win! We spent several years camping in Cavalier, and mom and dad were the official hosts there for many years. She loved being at the lake.
In later years, mom grew interested in
family trees and worked tirelessly to find
ancestors of hers and dad's family. She spoke to people from Scotland to New Zealand, and made many friends over the years. She also organized two family reunions (for both
families) in that time. She was fiercely proud of her family, and without measure, all the grandchildren. Her "trees" and finding out about her ancestors were a source of pride for her (and us!), and she did an amazing job!
A family service will be held, after which mom will be cremated.
Many, many thanks to all those who have sent flowers, cards, messages, and food. Your thoughtfulness and kind gestures are greatly appreciated. We would like to thank everyone in town who helped and visited mom when she was sick, and became her friend over the years, and all the friends who gave her great memories throughout her life.

We extend our condolences to Fern's family. She was a mover and a shaker, enjoying sports, organizing 'whatever' and helping when possible. Family History became important and she spent hours, days, nights and years searching for ties, with great success and filled several books. We will miss Fern, her quick wit and caring manner. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Bob & Audrey Madill (Bob - cousin ) on: May 09, 2020
