LOUIS PHILIPPE TETREAULT

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Louis Philippe Tetreault, at the Grace Hospital on August 9, 2020, at the age of 93.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys (née Barlo) after 64 years of marriage. He will be deeply missed by many, but especially by his two grandnieces, (Shelley Sager and Sherry Treichel) who attended to his daily ministrations as his health deteriorated.
Louis was born in St. Brieux Saskatchewan on December 22, 1926; one of Hormisdas and Eliza Tetreault's 11 children. He attended Gravelbourg and Success Business Colleges. After a short stint as a teacher, he enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the Department of National Revenue and retired in 1989. Afterwards, he worked as a volunteer tax preparer for 30 years.
His main leisure activities were golf, bridge, swimming and making the odd "friendly" wager on just about anything. He loved living downtown at the Kiwanis Chateau, where he and Gladys enjoyed many friendships. It gave them indoor access to the YMCA pool, Winnipeg library and church; both were staunch supporters of St. Mary's Cathedral.
He leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews who reside in various parts of Canada.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Louis's life will take place at St. Mary's Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Avenue, Winnipeg on Thursday, August 20, 2020 at 1:00 p.m.
Following the funeral, a private family entombment will take place at Living Waters Columbarium, St. Gianna Beretta Molla Roman Catholic Church, 15 Columbia Drive, Winnipeg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Grace Hospital Foundation or the Misericordia Health Centre Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I was saddened to read today of Lou's passing. I send belated condolences to his family and friends! I transferred to HQ in 1980 but during my 8 years in the Winnipeg office benefitted often on the job from Lou's understanding of human nature, and at Pine Ridge from his knowledge of the course! His sense of humour lightened every meeting with him. I will miss this fine man! - Posted by: Robert Way (Co-worket) on: Aug 28, 2021

  • My fondest memory of Uncle Lou was his fashion statements made on the golf course, plaid pants and polyester shirts. He was a humble man who always offered a friendly wager of something before every golf shot was made. Lou was my dad's (Stan) younger brother and will always be thought of on the first tee box of all future rounds played. Rest in Peace Lionel and Family (Saskatoon) - Posted by: Lionel Tetreault (nephew) on: Aug 24, 2020

  • I worked with Lou at CRA until he retired. Can’t believe it’s been that many years ago. He was always a kind and level headed person. Even though he didn’t have children of his own, he was always interested in hearing about our families. My co-workers and I enjoyed many “poker” nights with Lou. - Posted by: Rick Charles (Co-worker) on: Aug 19, 2020

  • Uncle Lou was my mother, Agnes (Tetreault) Rehaume's brother. Cal and I have many fond memories of him. Though we were apart in distance, we kept in touch through yearly Christmas greetings and letters along with phone calls. Also, we had the privilege of visiting him in Manitoba a couple of times. He was always so accommodating, would meet us at the train station, on lay overs from our trips to B.C. He was such a loving and generous man. He would be sure to treat us to dinners out and on occasion would take care of our accommodations for a night. He visited us here in Ontario and spent a few days and nights here with us. We are so grateful that we saw both him and Aunt Gladys three summers ago, when we stopped in Manitoba on our way home from B.C. As it turned out, it was to be our last visit with his wife Gladys, with him and with his sister-in-law Florence Tetreault. Many thanks to our cousins who cared for Uncle Lou daily during his illness and beyond. We sure will miss him but look forward to seeing him again with our Lord. - Posted by: Celine and Cal Hill (niece and my husband) on: Aug 17, 2020

  • Being the youngest daughter of Uncle Lou's big sister, Agnes - and what with living in Southern Ontario - I did not have so many opportunities to get to know Uncle Lou well. When I was very young, we made a few trips "Out West" which included stopping in Detroit to see Aunt Betty, and also Winnipeg to see Uncle Lou and Aunt Gladys, before heading to Saskatchewan and Alberta. My childhood memories of Uncle Lou are that of a "gentle giant" (he seemed so very tall to me!). A kind and good-natured gentleman. When I saw him once or twice in my young adult years, my impression of him was much the same. The last of the Tetreault clan to leave this earth, I pray that he is happily reunited with them all, and of course, his love Gladys. That he is rejoicing in meeting his loving Creator Whom he loved and honoured all his life. Sending love to all of my cousins and their families, as we unite in remembering and celebrating the life of our Uncle Lou. • Saying goodbye to my dear Uncle Lou is very difficult. He is the brother of my mother Agnes (Tetreault) Rehaume who passed away many years ago. My memories of Uncle Louis mostly come from when I was in my teens. He was a sweet, kind and caring man, gentle and with a great sense of humour. He was also my god father for my baptism along with his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Tetreault who was my god mother. Our family moved to the East, Ontario and we pretty much kept in contact by phone. I want to thank to Shelley and Sherry for being there for Uncle Lou during his illness and helping him. God bless both of you for being his helpmates! Uncle Lou, we will meet again in Heaven and share some big hugs and lots of memories. You will be missed so much by so many! Rest in peace Uncle in the arms of Jesus! Amen - Posted by: Lorraine Elizabeth Parker (Niece) on: Aug 17, 2020

  • Uncle Lou was a very special, wise and loving man. Very quiet, but once you were able to draw him out you had to love his sense of humour! We had, over the last few years, quite a few conversations by phone. Living so far apart since my youth we never had become close as we did these past years, as close as is possible over the phone. I live in Ontario, just across the river of Buffalo NY. Recently was able to talk to him quite a few times after his move to the residence. He would tell me about movie night, and really enjoyed the "big" bowl of popcorn they provided and the company of other tenants. Soon though he was not doing well. I will miss our phone conversations and our prayers together! I know he is happy and well now, with his wife, the whole Tetreault family and of course with Jesus! - Posted by: Marilyn Rehaume Latour (Niece) on: Aug 17, 2020

  • I am so sorry to hear of Lou's passing. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. My late husband and Lou both worked for the Department of National Revenue and became lifelong friends. They were both involved in the stock market and kept in touch almost daily to exchange ideas and discuss strategies. I will always remember Lou's kind and friendly nature and will keep him in my prayers. - Posted by: Shirley Ruchkall (Friends) on: Aug 15, 2020

  • Growing up in Winnipeg, our family spent much time visiting with Uncle Lou and Aunt Gladys. Licorice ice cream on Osborne Street or horse races at Assiniboine Downs were some of the outings I remember, as well as visits for dinner, cribbage and watching the (then) novel color TV. Uncle Lou was kind and gentle, smart and witty, easy-going and fun to be around. I will always have fond memories of our times together. He is in my prayers. - Posted by: Don Tetreault (Nephew) on: Aug 13, 2020

  • So sorry to learn of Lou's passing. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and friends. We became friends with Lou only a few years ago but long enough to appreciate and value a relationship so honest, well intentioned and beneficial. So very grateful our paths crossed. - Posted by: Lois and Garry Harland (Friends) on: Aug 12, 2020
