SHAW: November 24, 1928- January 13, 2009. G. Graeme Shaw, a longtime member of the Cardale community and a well known figure in Manitoba amateur sports, died on January 13, 2009 at Minnedosa Hospital. He was 80. Graeme will be sorely missed by his family: wife Mildred; son Harvey and his wife Janice, of Cardale; daughter Joy and her husband Doug Wilson, of Minnedosa; daughter Kay and husband Ray Haggarty, of Cardale; son Russell and his wife Lucy, of Seattle; and son Ross and his wife Michele, of Moosomin. He has 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Ernest K. Shaw, of Calgary. He was predeceased by his father and mother, John K. and Alison Shaw, of Cardale, and his sister Beatrice Martin, of Brandon. Graeme was born Nov. 24, 1928 on the family farm northwest of Cardale and farmed there for many decades. He also worked the adjacent farm, started by his grandfather more than 100 years ago, before partnering with his son, Harvey. Graeme was a strong pillar of the Cardale community and supported the local rink, the baseball club and the United Church for many years, working tirelessly to build and maintain the buildings and to help the organizations to flourish. Graeme loved team sports and was playing hockey regularly until a few months before his death from cancer, traveling to Old Timer hockey tournaments across Canada and in the United States. He was a friend to almost everyone he met, and loved to keep in touch with a network of people from coast-to-coast. Graeme will be remembered for his decades of work as a hockey and baseball organizer and as a coach. In the 1960s and 1970s his baseball teams competed successfully in interprovincial play. In 1993 he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Association honor society and in 2000 he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame. The North Central hockey league in 1995-96 awarded him the Chris Weber trophy for his support and the Cardale community honored him for his 26 years as president of the rink, ending in 1986. His sense of humor, his energy and his upbeat attitude were an inspiration to the people he worked with and to those he coached. Donations may be made in Graemes memory to the Cardale United Church Memorial Fund c/o Jean Fortune, Cardale, Manitoba, ROK OJO or to CancerCare Manitoba, P.O.
