SIMPSON: E. Murray Simpson, B. Arch. Passed away February 17, 2009 at his residence in Fairview Home in Brandon. Murray was born in Winnipeg in 1926 to Roy and Eva Simpson. Murray is survived by his wife, Mef Simpson, whom he married in 1950; children Vandy Simpson (Darrell Markowitz) of Wareham, Ontario, Dr. Carl Simpson (Anna Marie Larsen) of Waterloo, Ontario, Joanne (Ward Keith) and grandchildren Jonah and Arielle of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his brother Waverley (Pat) and nephews Bruce and Scott and their families, also of Winnipeg. Murray graduated from University of Manitoba in 1948 with a degree in architecture. He then spent two years of postgraduate studies at the School of Design in Chicago. He returned to Winnipeg and was employed at Green, Blankstein & Russell Architects, moving in 1960 to Brandon to open a branch office. Among the projects he worked on in Brandon were the Brandon General Hospital, the Parish Hall at St. Matthews Cathedral, the Brandon Sun, the Brodie Building and two residences on B. U. campus, Manitoba Public Insurance, Hobbs Manor, and the Garden Lounge at Fairview. Murray was an Honorary life member of the Children's Aid Society and past deputy governor for the Kinsmen Club of Brandon. He also served as president of the Brandon Allied Art Centre, the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba and served as a board member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. His hobbies included pottery, fencing, designing and painting theatre sets for the Ballet, MTC and Brandon School of Music. He loved travelling with his wife and friends and was an avid gourmet cook.
