Alice will be dearly remembered and sadly missed by her loving husband of 57 years, Robert (Bob) and their family; son Ken(Sheila) of Ste Anne, grandchildren Allison (Joe) and Jill (Glynn), great-grandsons Sheamus and Devlin; son Blake (Kris) of Gillam, grandchildren Shireen (Will), Courtney (Jason) and Derrick; daughter Pat (David) Bruderer of Gillam, grandchildren Jenna, Kyla and Reeva; daughter Glenna (Paul) Lockerby of Douglas, grandchildren Brandon and Larissa; brothers Harold (Betty) of Virden; Maurice (Muriel) of Chetwyn, B.C.; sister-in-law Alice of Virden; brother-in -law Neil (Carole) Reeves of Rivers;Aunt Christina (Tena) Hegan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Born in 1930, to Thomas and Margaret Hayward of the Blair District near Virden, 'Sis' was the youngest and only daughter of five children. She received her early education at the Blair School, completed high school in Virden and went on to teach in McAuley, Kemnay, Rivers, Brandon, Dublin School, Sinclair and Gillam, retiring in 1988. In 1952, Alice married Bob and they settled in Reston where they started their family. During this period Alice enjoyed playing fastball, golf, and curling. In 1967, Alice and Bob moved their family north to Gillam for two years and stayed for twenty-two. There they made new friends and enjoyed the activies of the area, taking up fishing, snowmobiling and the 'bush life'. Enjoyable times were had with family and friends at the 'shack in the bush' where Alice always kept a pot of food on the cook stove for visitors. In 1989, Alice and Bob retired to Virden where they renewed aquaintances with family, old friends and continued to make new friends. Alice returned to golfing and enjoyed curling in a variety of leagues, making new friends and enjoying the companionship of fellow golfers and curlers until her health prevented her participating. She was particularily proud of her involvement with the Golden Gals curling. Retirement allowed time to enjoy card games with family and friends, following sports, knitting, crocheting, tending to her flowers and keeping up with the grandchildrens' lives. Many an hour was spent going for a drive to enjoy the wildlife. Phone calls with family often reported how many baby bison, deer, skunks, crows and other animals were seen. Family was important to Alice and she cherished their visits and phone calls. Alice will be remembered for her bright smile and cheerful laugh. A memorial service was held in Virden, February 24, 2009 with interment at the Oak Lake Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
