MATHESON: Norman Robert Matheson passed away at the Souris Hospital on March 17, 2009 with his family by his side; succumbing to cancer after a long struggle with the disease. Norm is survived by his wife Margaret; children Norman G. (Cindy) and Janet Hume (Blair); grandchildren Mark Hume, Jenn Klemick (Sean), Karen Hume (Darwin), Brandi and Bryce Matheson; brother, David Matheson (Elsie); Sister-in-law, Sandra Ponomeranko (Glenn); and nieces and nephews, Elaine Anderson (Len), Bev Hitchen (Jay), Val Matheson Hall, Cindy Matheson, Ron Larsen (Marie). And great nieces and great nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents Norman A. and Vera; infant son Frederick; sister Edith and brother in law Larry Larsen; grandson Norman P. Barry; nephew Ralph Larson; and mother and father in-law Bertha and George Watkin. Norm was born on September 6, 1927 in Shaunavon, SK; the second of three children to Norman A. and Vera Matheson. The family moved to various places in Saskatchewan and Alberta, before settling in Souris in 1947 when Matheson Lumber was established. Norm worked for CP Rail for a period of time until he was injured in a train crash. He met and married Margaret Watkin of Brandon and settled in Souris, where they had three children, Norman G., Janet, and Frederick who passed away just hours after his birth. Marg joined Norm working for Matheson Lumber, as did the kids when they grew up, until the business was sold in 1977. In his younger days, Norm enjoyed taking part in curling and hunting. He was a member of the Souris Legion, the Souris Fire Department and the Chocolate Shop breakfast club. In his retirement years he was employed as the family taxi driver, shuttling grandkids to and from school at lunch hour, to and from the rink, the ball diamond, and the football field. When not employed as the family taxi driver, he was the family ambulance driver; picking up sick grandkids from school, taking them to the hospital, appointments or back home for grandma to look after.
