BURNSIDE: William “Bill” Burnside passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Assiniboine Centre. Dad was born on August 14, 1920 in Virden, Manitoba. He served overseas in WWII returning to Virden and marrying Noreen Ellis on August 1, 1946. They subsequently had three children, Valerie, Garth and David. They eventually moved to Brandon in 1959 where Dad spent the rest of his life, which is how he wanted it. Mom passed away on April 15, 2002 and shortly thereafter, Dad took up residence at Hobbs Manor where he made a comfortable home for himself for seven years. Even though the family suggested he move out to the West Coast where the rest of us lived, he wanted to stay at Hobbs as long as he could. Dad was predeceased by three sisters, Florrie, Maizie and Lilly and one brother, Sam. He is survived by one brother Cal, daughter Valerie (Brian) of White Rock, B.C., sons Garth (Wendy) of Vancouver, B.C., David (Lillian) of White Rock, B.C., granddaughters Marnie (Dan) Hazlett of Waterdown, ON, Kellie of Vancouver, Robyn (Christian) Cooke of Vancouver, Tessa of White Rock, grandsons Jason of Vancouver and Jordie of Jacksonville, FL. Dad loved to receive pictures and hear stories about his two great grandchildren, Bryson and Kaylee Hazlett. Dad was able to live on his own at Hobbs because of a great support system. Special thanks to his friends Art Wirch, Bruce Nichol, Jessie Metcalfe, Don Mains, Elaine Ready, Jackie Wells and Shirley Durnin. Thanks also to the care given to Dad by the nursing staff on the 2nd floor. At Dad’s request, there will be no funeral and the family is tentatively planning a celebration of life at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3. Messages of condolence may be placed at www.brockiedonovan.com.
