BROWN: February 24, 1923 – May 1, 2009. Dr. James S. Brown, B.Sc., M.D., D.O., D.L.O., F.R.C.S. (ENG), F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S. (CAN) passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary, Alberta on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Dr. Brown was born on February 24, 1923 in Brandon, Manitoba and obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1949. He did specialized study in ear nose and throat medicine at the University of London, England where he also played professional hockey. In 1952, Dr. Brown met and later married Miss Lucille Millions, a graduate of the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing. They returned to Canada in 1956 to establish a medical practice in Calgary. Dr. Brown devoted the rest of his life to the surgical treatment of the deaf, doing over 30,000 operations, including the first successful case in Calgary in 1957. He was an active member of his profession, publishing numerous articles on his research into deafness and presenting his findings at academic conferences around the world. Dr. Brown ws an active member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Petroleum Club, and the Glencoe Club. He enjoyed playing tennis and golf and was an avid fisherman; he particularly enjoyed salmon fishing off Vancouver Island. He was also an accomplished skier. He had a deep love for Banff, having first come to the town as a bell hop during his University days. He returned to Banff later in life and established a part time medical practice there. Dr. Brown was particularly honoured to receive the degree Doctor of Science (honoris causa) from his alma mater Brandon University on May 29, 2004 in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the advancement of medical and surgical knowledge in his field and to his continued affiliation and contribution to Brandon University. Dr. Brown was very active until the last day of life, enjoying good health and fellowship. At the time of his passing he was in the process of planning a trip to Europe and assisting Brandon University with the establishment of a Medical Sciences Facility. He will be sorely missed by all who loved and knew him. Dr. Brown is survived by his loving wife Lucille Brown; his four children, John, David (Father Raphael), Mary Ann and Michelle; their spouses Carina, Van Olm Brown, Matt Heffring, and Daniel Cojocariu; five grandchildren, Alexandra, Houston, Mabel, Maxwell, and Dan; sister Joyce and her husband Bob Besant; brother-in-law Jack and his wife Lynn Millions; nieces, Joan and Faye; and nephews, Roger, Jeff and Garth.
