MAHER: After ninety-six years, Howard passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Born in Vancouver on April 13, 1913, the family moved to Manitoba in 1915 to farm in the Rounthwaite area. Howard married Mary Barns in 1950. With three children, he spent a lot of time driving to baseball, hockey, curling, music and numerous school activities, most of which he stayed to watch or coach. As a 4-H leader, he was well known around Wawanesa. Howard was very active in the community, serving as a municipal counsellor, a Board member of the Co-op, Wawanesa Hospital, Church and a volunteer for whatever needed to be done. Camping was a favorite summer family activity with regular treks west to visit family in Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. Howard and Mary loved square dancing and travelled with the many friends they met to jamborees across the country. After retiring from farming in 1972, they had time for travelling to England, Hawaii, California, Arizona, and coast-to-coast Canada. In 2000, Howard moved off the farm into Riverheights Terrace where he enjoyed the company and activities of other retirees. Left to mourn are: sons Jim and Ray (Wendy) and daughter Jean (Don) Elcheshen; granddaughters: Tracy (Colin) Grierson, Tara, Nikki, and Brooklyn; great-grandchildren Maya and Evan Grierson. Howard was predeceased by his wife Mary (1991), daughter-in-law Gail (2007), brothers Norman and Wes, sisters Clara and Doris. Howard always reminded his family that he had a good, long life and we should do the same,"live life to its fullest." A Memorial Service will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church, 5th Street and Southern Avenue, on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Jim Brown will officiate. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Howard may be made to a charity of one's choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
