WOOD: Howard Thomas of Souris passed away peacefully in the Souris Health Centre on May 10, 2009 at the age of 82 years. Howard was born at Minto, Manitoba on October 21, 1926 to the late Fred and Emma Wood. Howard grew up on the family farm near Minto. At a young age he worked for several farmers in the Minto area, he worked on the Trans-Canada pipeline and also worked to build the Dam in Souris. Howard then returned home to help his Dad on the family farm, eventually farming on his own. Howard married Susan Chambers on November 18, 1960. Howard and Susan had three children Dennis, Debbie and Brenda. After retiring from farming, Howard and Susan lived in Brandon where Howard had many jobs including baling flax straw and care taking the Towers Apartments. Howard and Susan moved to Oak Lake Beach where he spent many hours renovating cabins getting them ready to sell and had many good times with his friends at the Saturday night card games. Dad also enjoyed his coffee and conversation with guys at the local coffee shop. He hated to miss a good auction sale and couldnt resist a good deal. Howard is survived by his wife Susan of Souris, son Dennis and partner Isabelle of Cremona, Alberta, daughter Debbie Dooley and partner Frank Denbow of Souris, daughter Brenda Wood of Souris. Grandchildren: Christopher (Dessa) Dooley of Winnipeg, Jason Dooley of Brandon, Shawna Wood of Brandon (currently in Australia), and Ashlyn Wood of Souris. Howard is also survived by his sisters Helen (Tom) Woodman of British Columbia, Laura Rayner of Gibsons British Columbia, Doreen (Earl) Patterson of Boissevain, Brother George (Sally) Wood of British Columbia, as well as many nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his parents Fred and Emma Wood, Brothers Harvey and Ken Wood, brother-in-law Harold Rayner. Funeral services were held at Kowalchuks Funeral Chapel, Souris, Manitoba on Saturday, May 16, 2009 with his nephew Darrel Wood officiating. Interment was in the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chris Dooley, Jason Dooley, Greg Patterson, Eric Patterson, Frank Denbow and Dale Raymer. In memory of Howard, donations may be made to the Souris Personal Care Home Sun Room Fund c/o A.R.H.A. Box 10 Souris, Manitoba, R0K 2C0.
