BELL: Mildred Alice (Edwards) Bell of Brandon, formerly of Alexander, died at her residence, Dinsdale Personal Care Home, on Monday, June 1, 2009 at the age of 94. Mildred (‘Millie’) was born October 22, 1914 at Waskada, Manitoba, the only daughter of the late George and Kate Edwards. Mildred had three older brothers – Arthur, Max and Russell Edwards – and one younger brother – Lloyd Edwards. Mildred grew up in the Ebor-Kromer area. She completed her Grade 11 in Ebor and continued on to Virden to finish her Grade 12. After graduation, she took a hairdressing course and worked for a number of years at Scory’s on 9th Street in Brandon. On November 29th, 1948 Millie married Hugh Ralph Bell; she and Ralph farmed south of Alexander. Mildred and Ralph had one daughter, Shannon Mildred Bell. Millie and Ralph retired from farming and moved to Brandon in the fall of 1973. Mildred designed their new house in Brandon. Following Ralph’s death in 1985, she moved to a newly built apartment at Odd Fellow’s Corner and lived there for twenty-one years. In February 2006, Mildred moved to Dinsdale where she was able to continue an active life until three months ago. Mildred was predeceased by her husband Ralph Bell (1985), by her brothers Arthur (1994), Lloyd (1995), Max (1996) and Russell (1998). Mildred is survived by her daughter Shannon Bell of Toronto, her sisters-in-law Mill (Russell) Edwards and Phyllis Clark of Souris, as well as nieces and nephews on the Bell side of the family. A Celebration of Life Service was held at Brockie-Donovan Chapel on Friday, June 5, 2009, with Major Velma and Captain Bill Preston of The Salvation Army officiating. Shannon Bell gave a tribute to her Mother followed by a memorial film. Everyone attending the funeral was considered to be an honorary pallbearer.
