HOPKINS: Alvera Inez, July 16, 1923 - July 13, 2009. Passed away at Minnedosa Hospital at the age of 85. Alvera was born in the Bethany district, the eldest child in a family of eight. She married John Hopkins in 1943 and they settled on the Hopkins homestead in the Clanwilliam area. She was a busy homemaker most of her life, growing large gardens for canning, baking bread almost daily, knitting whenever she took time for herself, and helping wherever needed on the farm. When John passed away in 1971, she continued to reside on the family farm until her marriage in 1978 to Hayward Hopkins, who continued to farm the land for a few years until it was sold. Minnedosa then became their permanent home. Alvera always enjoyed their trips to B.C. to visit family and friends. She was active for many years with the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. In her senior years, knitting became her passion and the family have all been recipients of her many projects. She was predeceased by her first husband, John Hopkins; Boni (Young) Oman, who they raised from a young age; parents George and Mayme (Boyd) Summers; brothers Merton, Norris, Frank and Allan Summers (at birth); sister Leone (in infancy). She is survived by her husband, Hayward; two sons Maurice Hopkins of Minnedosa, Merton (Ingrid) Hopkins of Mannville, Alberta; daughter Debbie (Rick) Oman of Clanwilliam; eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Also survived by brother Dennis (Dian) Summers of Winnipeg; and sister Lorraine Schroeder of Kanata, Ontario. A service to celebrate Alveras life was held on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at St. Johns Anglican Church in Bethany, Manitoba with Reverend Paul Curtis officiating. Interment preceded the service at St. Johns Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or the charity of your choice.
