HAMMOND: Mildred Lois Hammond (nee Deacon). The death of Mildred Lois Hammond (Deacon) occurred July 17, 2009 at Evergreen Place, Boissevain, Manitoba. Mildred was born October 5, 1914, at her home in the Desford District, the only daughter of Henry and Lulu Deacon. Mildred started school at Desford School and completed Grades 1 – 8 there. After completing Grade 9 in Boissevain Mildred’s father, Henry, passed away. Mildred quit school to help out on the farm. Mildred met Eddie Hammond at a Desford dance and they were married Oct. 15, 1938. They farmed on the Hammond homestead and were blessed with three children: Elva, Brian, and Dawn. Eddie died accidentally in 1951. Mildred and the children stayed on the farm with the help of Eddie’s brother, Roy. In 1958, Mildred married Roy Hammond. They farmed until 1970 when they semi-retired to their home on Aikman Street in Boissevain. Mildred’s main interest was her family. After raising her three children, she became a Grandma to 9 Grandchildren. She could often be seen attending their activities and lending a helping hand. Mildred had the good fortune to enjoy the arrival of 14 great grandchildren and all of the pleasure and delight they brought her. Mildred was an active member of the community. Growing up, Mildred was involved in Anglican Church and Desford District activities. Following her marriage, she was involved in Brownlea District and Brownlea Good Neighbours Club. Mildred was a member of the Women’s Institute where she held several offices including president. After several years of service, she was awarded a W. I. Life Membership. She also served as a director for 20 years in the Turtle Mountain Agriculture Society. After their move to Boissevain, Mildred and Roy both joined Beckoning Hills Activity Club. Mildred especially enjoyed making ceramics, playing 500 and attending the social gatherings. Mildred and Roy also took pleasure in many bus tours and trips to various points across North America over the years. Needlework kept Mildy occupied on quiet days. She was especially proud of the picture she made at the age of 93, which won first prize and a point of praise at the Boissevain fair. Mildred is survived by three children and nine grandchildren: Elva Ludgate and family, Jacki, Ed, Shawna, and Heather (Mike); Brian (Margaret) Hammond, Brad (Candice), Bob (Lisa), and Andy; Dawn Guliani, Sanjay (Janet) and Shereen (Ronnie); and fourteen great grandchildren; Erika and Sarah Ludgate, Zoe and Liam Fleger, Dano, Brendan, Jordan, and Kendall Hammond, Jenny and Riley Hammond, Brett and Jessa Hammond, and Raina and Maddox Guliani; as well as sisters-in-law Mary Barry and Beth (Hugh) Morrill, and numerous nieces and nephews.
