REEVES: Robert John Bob Reeves died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Virden Health Centre after a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Alice in February 2009. Dad will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family: son Ken (Sheila) of Ste Anne and Kens daughters Allison (Joe) and Jill (Glynn), great grandsons Sheamus and Devlin; son Blake (Kris) of Gillam, grandchildren Shireen (Will), great grandson Michael, Courtney (Jason) and Derrick; daughter Pat (David) Bruderer of Gillam, grandchildren Jenna, Kyla and Reeva; daughter Glenna (Paul) Lockerby of Douglas, grandchildren Brandon and Larissa. Bob is also survived by his brother Neil (Carole) Reeves of Rivers, his brothers-in-law Harold (Betty) Hayward of Virden, Maurice (Muriel) Hayward of Chetwynd, BC; sister-in-law Alice Hayward of Virden, aunt- in-law Christina (Tena) Hagan of Virden as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born in 1927 to John and Faith Reeves of Oak Lake, Manitoba, Bob was the middle of 5 children. He received his early education in Oak Lake. In his late teens he abandoned school to work as a farm hand. In 1952, Bob married Alice Mildred Hayward of Virden and they made their home in Reston for the next 15 years. Becoming a heavy equipment operator, Bob worked on the building of many roads throughout southwestern Manitoba. Winter employment drew Bob north to work on the tractor trains hauling freight to various remote northern communities such as Fort Severn and Winisk, Ontario. On his last northern trek he discovered the beginning of construction of the Kettle power dam in the Gillam area and this lead Bob and Alice to pack up their family and venture north in September, 1967. They went for 2 years and stayed for 22 years. These years offered Bob the opportunity to meet many people from around the world. Leisure time was spent enjoying fishing, snowmobiling and time at the shack in the bush with family and friends, where Bob always had a piece of advice for whomever crossed the threshold. Retirement to Virden in 1989 allowed for card games with family and friends, gardening and many drives throughout the countryside. Family was important to Bob and he enjoyed their many visits; digging baby potatoes with the grandchildren, teaching his grandchildren to play crib and often commenting as to whether it was a good day for skunks.A graveside funeral service will be held at Oak Lake Cemetery, Oak Lake, Manitoba Friday; July 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Lydia Glawson officiating. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Virden and District Health Auxiliary Remembrance Fund or to the charity of your choice in memory of Bob.
