NELSON: Ivan Nelson of Brandon, beloved husband of Leota and dear father of Diane and Grant, passed away peacefully at Hillcrest Place on Monday, October 26th, 2009, at the age of 78 years. Ivan was born to Clarence and Peggy Nelson on October 16th, 1931, at the family farm near Carberry. Brother Bob arrived in March of 1937. Ivan attended Stinson School, then high school in Carberry. During those years, he was actively involved on the farm, particularly enjoying, at age 14, a special licence to drive the farm truck, later hauling grain and getting acquainted with many people in the vicinity of Carberry. In the late 1940s, Ivan began a varied career with employment at Eatons, in Shilo, at Manitoba Hydro, Barker Agencies, and then, for several decades, as a travelling salesman, selling appliances, furniture and interior design items. Ivan thoroughly enjoyed his time on the road and treasured many close friendships with the clients he called on throughout Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario. He was a devoted member of the Associated Canadian Travellers, attending several ACT conventions over the years and actively supporting the annual Travellers Day Parade. Travelling was not only a career choice, but also a holiday passion. The family enjoyed many wonderful trips to B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, and two jaunts to Disneyland. In retirement, over the course of 20 years, Ivan and Leota escaped annually to California for a month or two. They also treasured special trips to Hawaii and Great Britain. Ivan is survived by Leota, his wife of 55 years, daughter Diane (husband Ken McPhail), son Grant, all of Brandon; brother Bob (wife Jane) of Richmond, B.C.; special cousin Jean Jewell (husband Peter) of Burlington, ON; as well as two brothers-in-law, two sisters- in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A Service of Remembrance is being held today, Saturday, October 31, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at the Brockie Donovan Chapel with Mr. Lawrence McInnes officiating. A private family interment will take place prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ivan may be made to a charity of choice. My LeavingFill not your hearts with pain and sorrow,But think of me, please today, tomorrow.Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles,The times we shared, for a little while.Although my leaving causes pain and grief,My hurts been eased; Ive found relief. So dry your eyes, and remember me.Not as I am now as I used to be.Miss me a little, but not too long,And not with your head bowed low.Remember the love that was once shared.Miss me, but let me go.
