HORNE: George Alexander Horne, FCA. It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of a very dear husband, father, and grandfather, George Horne, on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, in his 89th year. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Ruby; his children George (Marilyn), grandson, Sean of Whitecourt, Alberta; Howard (Gina), grandchildren Leslie, Ryan and Kevin of St. Albert, Alberta; Aynsley (Reg) Helwer, grandchildren Jessica, Andrew, Carolyn and Adam of Brandon; and Heather (David) Whistle, grandsons Jackson and Brandon of Kelowna, B.C. Dad is also survived by his brother Roderick (Ivy) in Winnipeg, as well as several other relatives and dear friends. Dad was predeceased by his infant son, John; his parents; and two brothers, Gordon and Hugh. Dad was born and raised in Winnipeg. He enlisted in the R.C.A.S.C. in 1940 and served in Canada, U.K., Italy, and northwest Europe before being discharged in 1946. He married his beloved Ruby Isabel in 1951 and received his Chartered Accountants Degree in 1953 from the University of Manitoba. Dad and Mum moved to Neepawa where he opened his own accounting practice and was an active member of the community, volunteering his time with many local organizations. In 1975, Dad merged his practice with Meyers Norris and Penny of Brandon. He retired in 1985, and was honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1988. Dad had a wonderful personality, always looking on the positive side of things in life. He was a very kind, gentle, humble and generous man, who dearly loved his wife and family very much. He was always concerned and interested in his grandchildren and liked to be kept up-to-date on things happening in their lives. He especially enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Clear Lake, where there were many happy family gatherings. Dad loved to go boating and going for strolls along the lake. Dad also enjoyed travelling with Mum during retirement, visiting relatives in Australia and New Zealand. Some winter holidays were spent in Palm Springs. One year they decided to spend the winter in Victoria, where they enjoyed the quality of life so much that they decided to move there in 1997. They enjoyed eight happy years in Victoria. In 2005, Dad and Mum decided to move back to Brandon to be close to family, and have since enjoyed the many friendships they have made while living at Riverheights Terrace. Dad was a member of Wheat City Lodge No. 168 and the Royal Canadian Legion. He served as Past Master of the Neepawa Masonic Lodge and Past Grand Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Khartum Shriners and a Past President of the Brandon Shrine Club. We are so thankful to the staff at the Brandon Regional Health Centre for the loving care they gave to our Dad while he was in the hospital. Their kindness was an incredible blessing to our family. A memorial service to celebrate Dads life will be held at St. Matthews Cathedral, 403- 13th Street, Brandon, on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. Interment of ashes in the Cathedral Columbarium will immediately follow.
