SMITH: Douglas Allan, the son of Wilfred and Lillian (Tolton) Smith, born March 22, 1922, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2009 at the age of 87. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Shirley (Thompson) and four children Gerald (Lynne), Janice (Len), Jo-Anne (Merv), and Sally (Ian). One of the highlights of his life were his ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dad was born and raised on the family farm north of Oak Lake, Manitoba, along with sisters, Bessie and Dorothy and brother, Maurice. He attended Hagyard School and once completing his schooling joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon returning to the farm he began a lifelong, rewarding career in agriculture. To diversify Dad became a Registered Swine Breeder and a member of the Seed Grower’s Association. Dad’s passion for farming spilled over into the community as he served as a member of the Oak Lake and Manitoba Agricultural Societies. In 2003 he was inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in recognition for his contributions to agriculture. For many years he was an active member of the St. David‘s and Oak Lake United Churches. Dad was proud to be a life member of the Oak Lake Legion. After his retirement Doug took pleasure in traveling, fishing, gardening, golfing and reading. As a couple, Doug and Shirl enjoyed socializing and dancing with their many friends. Music was always a passion they shared. He loved to tell a good joke or respond with his quick wit. During his hospitalization, Doug appreciated visits from friends and family. Sincere thanks go to Dr. Groves and the staff and new friends he made in the ICU and on A2 and A3 in the Assiniboine Centre. He referred to you as his “life support”. Funeral service was held at the Oak Lake United Church on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 followed by interment at the Johnston Cemetery. Charitable donations can be made in Doug’s memory to the Oak Lake and Area Foundation, Box 133, Oak Lake, Manitoba, R0M 1P0. G. R. Carscadden Funeral Services of Virden was in charge of arrangements.
