WHALEN: 1917-2009. It is with sadness that the family of Louise Barbara Whalen (McKenzie) announces the passing of their sister and aunt. Louise was born on December 8, 1917 and passed away at the Souris hospital on November 18, 2009. She was in her 92nd year. Louise was the second of seven children born to Adam and Maggie McKenzie. She attended school in the Whitewater and Swaffham schools. Louise worked in the Hartney district until March 10, 1939 when she married George Whalen. They farmed in the Underhill and Melgund districts until 1961 when they bought some land north of Hartney. The sold their land in 1975 and moved to a house in Hartney where Louise lived until just before her passing. Louise was predeceased by her parents Adam and Maggie, her husband George, sisters Florence and Shirley (Cantlon), and her brother Bob. She will be sadly missed by her sister Irene (McPhee) of Calgary, and her brothers Allan (Adele) and Jim (Evelyn) both of Brandon. Although Louise had no children of her own, she took pride in her many nieces and nephews who will also miss their Auntie Louie. Louise was involved in her community as a member of the Hartney Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Rebekah Lodge, and Unit A of the United Church. Louise was a quiet woman who enjoyed gardening, visiting with friends, dining out, and playing Bingo. She also liked to travel and she kept many souvenirs of the bus trips she was able to enjoy over the years. A graveside service was held on November 22, 2009 at the Hartney cemetery with her friends and family in attendance. Kowalchuk’s Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. If friends so desire, a donation in Louise’s name may be made to the Charity of their choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Cram and all the nursing staff at the Souris hospital for the care given to Louise in her time of need. Thanks also to the home care workers who helped Louise stay in her home for the past few years. Lastly, a very special thanks to Eleanor Vandusen for the true friendship and care she provided Louise over the years.
