SMITH: James Wayne Smith "Smitty". May 14, 1942 to December 28, 2009. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Wayne Smith, on December 28th, 2009. Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 46 years, Sandra "Sandy" Smith and his six children: Debora, Patti (Pat), Sue (Richard), Joy (Don), Steve (Darryl), and Jennifer (William); ten grandchildren: Ben, Jillian, Chris, Rebecca, Jake, Drake, Dustin, Kaitlyn, Taylor, and Daphne; as well as his sisters: Sharon (Lloyd), Denise, Janet (Bob), and Donna and countless nieces and nephews. Wayne was born in Coronach, Saskatchewan in 1942 and moved to Clandeboye, Manitoba before finally residing in Winnipeg where he met and married the love of his life in 1963. He moved his family to Brandon where he worked as a Journeyman Plumber/Pipefitter with UA Local 254 for 32 years. He worked primarily out of the province, enduring hair- raising two-seater plane trips to camps that had only mud roads and tents to sleep in until 1981 when his youngest daughter was born. Wayne was the true handyman, believing every problem could be fixed with a "little" duct tape. He enjoyed touring and camping throughout rural Manitoba and Western Canada with Sandy, and his children. He was also an avid movie watcher/collector with a collection of serialized movies that numbered over 5000 at last count. His favorites were always his John Wayne movies or a good comedy. He always lived his life with as much humor as possible, trying to get his girls not to take life so seriously. He was always ready with a quick jab, or joke to lighten the mood. Wayne was world famous (to his devoted following) for his French Fries. No one since has been able to even come close to perfecting his "recipe". He was always a planner - never to be found without his clipboard, ruler, pencil, and fountain pens. He would plot gardens, draw up blueprints for the house, and make lists of all his vehicle "speculations" -he religiously purchasing Auto Traders every week to see if there were any "good finds". Wayne will always be remembered as a constant force in the lives of those he touched. His love was truly unconditional and he taught his children that every person had worth and value even if you could only agree to disagree with them. He was always supportive of all his family and proud of every member's accomplishments no matter how small they may have been. The family would like to thank the staff at Fairview Home for their care and comfort in his final days. As well, many thanks to the countless number of nurses, nurses aides and doctors who helped in Wayne's care while at the Assiniboine Centre and in the Brandon Regional Health Centre. A Memorial Service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North (Brandon, Manitoba) on Monday, January 4, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Laird Russell Yearwood will officiate.
