SLOOTWEG: Nicolaas "Nick" Slootweg of Brandon, loving husband of Nell, and father of John, Nick, Ron, Jo-Anne and Arlene passed away on January 6, 2010 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of 84 years. Nick was born May 29, 1925 in Haarlemmermeer, The Netherlands. He served with the mandatory Dutch Army and was posted to Indonesia from 1946 until 1949. Following his service in the Army, Nick left The Netherlands in 1952 to scout out locations for immigration to Canada. Nick married Nell van Tol on June 24, 1953 and a month later they left for Canada settling in Brandon. Upon arrival in Brandon, Nick was employed as a school bus driver at the Residential School until 1958 and then spent two years working at BA Gas Station. For the next 14 years, Nick distributed beverages for BellBottling, Pepsi, Coke, 7-up and finally Pic-A-Pop. Nick owned and operated Nick's Shell Service on 18th and Rosser from 1974 until his retirement in 1989. Nick was a craftsman, self-taught auto mechanic who enjoyed cars and reading. Together, he and Nell enjoyed travelling to The Netherlands, California and to western Canada making extra "loops" off the direct path of travel to visit their children. Nick is survived by his wife Nell and his five children, son John (Suzan) of Athabasca, Alberta, granddaughter Melanie (Leif) Anderson, great-grandsons Tyler and Nathan of Dubai, UAE, granddaughter Angela (Darrel) Bogdanek, great- grandchildren Bryce and Brooke of Sexsmith, Alberta; son Nick (Joan), grandson Nico of Whitecourt, Alberta; son Ron (Doreen) of Sexsmith, Alberta; daughter Jo-Anne, granddaughter Ashlee of Sexsmith, Alberta; daughter Arlene (David) Leech, grandchildren Morgan and Ryan of Brandon, Manitoba. Also surviving are two brothers, two sisters and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister and three brothers. The Funeral Service to celebrate Nick's life took place on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North. Arlene Robertson officiated. Interment followed in Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Slootweg, Nick Slootweg, Ron Slootweg, David Leech, Ryan Leech and family friend Paul Antonakis.
