SCARROW: The death of Orville Garnet Scarrow, formerly of Rivers, Manitoba, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at the age of 90 years. Garnet was born on November 23, 1919 in Arcola, Saskatchewan the son of Edward and Margaret (nee Hay) Scarrow. Garnet attended school at Spy Hill and Crosby. He was in the Services for fiveyears with the Fort Garry Horse through France, Belgium, The Netherlands andNorthwest Europe. Upon his return he started farming west of Binscarth in early 1946. Later that year he married Muriel White of Binscarth. He drove the school van for about two years, while they were in Binscarth. Sons Brian and Wayne were born there. They then moved to Brandon where Garnet worked for the C.P.R., then the City of Brandon. Daughter Kim and son Ross were born in Brandon. In 1961 they moved to Rivers where he worked at the Canadian Armed Forces base as a stationary engineer. Dad was a baseball coach for many years, while Wayne and Ross were growing up and we were forever going out of town for a baseball tournament, Dad liked his curling. Dad and Mom loved to go out to the Rivers Legion on a Saturday night dancing and spending time with their friends. Before Mom took sick, there were manyfamily get-togethers with aunts, uncles, cousins (Grandparents in Winnipeg) in Binscarth, Foxwarren and Brandon. They also would come to Rivers where we lived at different farmhouses. We all spent time at the lake swimming, fishing and barbecuing. Dad was predeceased by Mom who fought hard and lost her battle to cancer in 1968. We remember that day; either by her side at the hospital, or were home for Thanksgiving supper when the phone call came. In April, 1969, Garnet married Ilene Matheson (Robinson) of Binscarth and she had three sons, Grant, Glenn and Robert. In 1971 the Rivers base closed at which time he was then employed at the B.M.H.C. and ACC as a stationary engineer. He was then employed at the Canadian Forces base in Portage while residing at Rivers, coming home on his days off until his retirement. Dadand Mom would take their camper down to the lake and park it for the summer, there would be lots of fishing, boat rides and grandchildren could be found hanging out. In years past, Dad could be found down at the Legion variousnights playing crib with his friends and until as late as this summer, taking on Brandon and Bradley trying to beat Grandpa at a game. Dad enjoyed a good "game of crib". Dad was a life member at the Royal Canadian Legion #75 Rivers for 65 years where he volunteered for the weekly bingo for over 20 years. Garnet continued to attend Fort Garry Horse reunions until age began to take its toll. He saw his Regiment for the last time in November of 2005 where he was the Guest of Honour. Sixty five years ago, Garnet was one of more than 15,000 Canadians who stormed June Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day. On August 31, 1946 Garnet received the "Belgian Croix Du Guerre with Leaf" for Bravery in the operation north of the Antwerp-Turnhout Canal on 28th of September, 1944. The citation reads "In every action this Non-Commissioned Officer gave evidence of not only considerable fighting ability and skill but complete disregard for his own safety in his efforts to get the job done." Special thanks to the Honour Guards who attended, we appreciate all the kind words and memories you have shared with us. You have made us even more proud of our father, grandfather and great- grandfather. Viewing for family and friends was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, Tuesday, January 5, 2010.
