FAST: Katherina (Tena). Tena Fast of Brandon, Manitoba died peacefully March 1, 2010 at 88 years. Her memory is cherished by her children Leonard (Maryanne), Henry (Antoinette van Kuik), Agatha (Al Doerksen), Ed (ede); eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; plus other relatives and friends. Tena was predeceased by her husband Jake Fast in 1998. She was born in Friedensruh, Molotschna, Ukraine (formerly Russia) on May 11, 1921 to Peter and Katherine Janzen (Neufeld). The family emigrated to Canada in 1930 eventually settling in Whitewater, Manitoba. Sadly, her mother died enroute in Hamburg, Germany. Her father remarried to Barbara Dyck. Tena married Jacob (Jake) Fast in 1943 in a double wedding with her sister and close friend, Betty and Henry Froese. After a time spent farming, Tena and Jake moved to Brandon in 1952 where she lived in the same house for the next 58 years. She greatly enjoyed gardening and flowers, but also was an active partner in Jake's appliance repair business. Together the two enjoyed many road trips to Western and Eastern Canada, and the US. Highlights for them were international trips to the Holy Land in 1965, and a trip to Mexico to visit their children in 1977. Later in 1983, Tena travelled to India to see her daughter, Agatha, and family. She told detailed stories of these trips for many years. She also loved word puzzles because these kept her mind sharp. Tena's faith was important to her; she was baptized upon confession of her faith on May 28, 1939 by Rev. J. H. Enns. Upon moving to Brandon, (Jake and) Tena became active members of the McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church. Tena will be remembered for her generosity, her determination and her consistency, not to mention the cinnamon buns, apple pies and butter tarts. Her three fridges and two freezers were always bountifully stocked! A memorial service will be held for Tena Fast at the McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church, 635 McDiarmid Drive, Brandon, Manitoba on Thursday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations in Tena's memory can be made to Christian & Missionary Alliance Church (Missions Program) and/or Heart & Stroke Foundation. #3 - 824 18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 3S5. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
