REID: Verna (Schofield) (Clarke) Reid. Verna Reid went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 19 at Hillcrest Place Nursing Home in Brandon, Manitoba at 90 years of age. Verna had been residing at Hillcrest since January 7, 2010 after having lived at Hamiota since 1956. She is survived by four children: Gayle Rouse of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Marlene Clarke of Brandon, Ed Clarke of Thompson and Carol Clarke of Winnipeg as well as eight grandchildren: John (Dennice) Rouse, Roxanne Lennon, Rocky (Tracy) Martell, Diana (Brad Mills), Janette (John Leeson), Ken (Shannon) Rouse, Cindy White and Bonnie Rouse. She is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren: Dustin, Codie, Braeden, Jordan and Jocelyn Rouse, Chauncie Lennon, Brittany, Amanda and Riley Leeson, Ashli, Elya and Katrina Mills, Dayton Martell and Samantha White. She was predeceased by her parents Albert and Ethel Schofield, her first husband W. George Clarke, her second husband Les Reid and her grandson Shaun White. Verna and George Clarke made their home in Foxwarren, Beulah, Brandon and Hamiota where she resided until January of this year. After George's death in 1971, Verna married Les Reid in 1972 and they enjoyed the next nine years together until his passing. Verna was a very friendly, outgoing woman with her door always open to anyone, even if she wasn't home. She offered friend and stranger alike who came her way refreshments and food along with lively conversation. She was a long time participant and often leader in various church, community and Rebecca Lodge events in every community where she lived. Verna always had a special love for children, having fostered over 50 children from 1958 until the late 1970's. She was administrator for a children's camp for many years. She babysat and was adopted grandma to many in the community and beyond. She loved to travel, often driving to Saskatchewan and Alberta to visit family and friends. She never missed her grandchildren’s' special events, as well as those of her adopted grandchildren, especially the Grainger twins and McMillan girls. She participated in events with her great grandchildren as long as her health allowed. Verna took numerous trips to various places in North America with her husband Les and later with her best friend Hazel Hatton. She was a very vibrant woman who left her mark everywhere she walked. A service to celebrate her life was held at the Hamiota Pentecostal Church, Hamiota, MB, on Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. A reception for family and friends followed the service at Chumah Hall, Hamiota United Church. Interment took place at the Foxwarren Cemetery, Foxwarren, Manitoba at 4:30 p.m. For those so desiring, donations may be made in Verna’s memory to the Manhattan Beach Retreat Centre (Youth Camp Program), Box 62, Ninette, Manitoba, R0K 1R0.
