SCHAFER: Elmer Norman Schafer passed away at Riverdale Health Centre, Rivers, on Thursday, March 4, 2010. Elmer was born March 11, 1926 at Three Hills, Alberta. He was raised on the family farm in Alberta and attended Crown School. Elmer served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. He worked in the coal mines and lumber camps before joining the RCAF. Elmer married Elizabeth Ann Frank on September 2, 1953. After 31 years of military service, Elmer and Beth retired to Rivers, Manitoba. Elmer was interested in photography, woodworking, gardening and water gardens. He loved nature and volunteered with Manitoba Conservation. Elmer was a man of great faith who served his Lord and Saviour and church whole heartedly. The Lions Club in Rivers and the Little Saskatchewan River Conservation District were two of the organizations that Elmer belonged to. Elmer is survived by his wife Beth(nee Frank) Schafer, daughters: Debbi Petherick (Garry), Wendy Adams (Mark), Sue Klassen (Bob), Norma Chmelyk (Darren). Also surviving are sisters: Martha Anderson, Edwina Mauch, Maria Chizen (Mike) and Viona Barton (Andy), as well as eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Elmer was predeceased by parents Edward and Salomea (Thurn) Schafer; sister Frieda; brothers: Ernest and Harvey; grandson Tyler Kerr as well as father- in-law and mother-in-law Bill and Mary Frank. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Grace Lutheran Church, Brandon on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Edmund Mielke officiated. A private interment followed in the Roseville Cemetery. A time of fellowship was held at the St. James Anglican Church, Rivers in the Lower Level. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Elmer to the Manitoba Lung Association, #8, 940 Princess Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 0P6, the Grace Lutheran Memorial Fund, 3101 Victoria Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7B 3P3, or to a charity of choice.
