BURNETT: 1927 2010. Peacefully, on March 22, 2010, Georgina Burnett passed away at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba at the age of 83. Georgie was born on February 25, 1927 at Deloraine, Mb. and grew up on the family farm by Dand. She attended the Ontario School for the Blind in Brantford, Ontario from the age of 9 through 18, where she learned many skills and enhanced her natural independent spirit that carried her through many challenges over her. She loved to ride horseback, and often accompanied her father and grandfather where they showed, and later judged, draught horses at Westman area fairs. Georgina moved to Winnipeg in the mid 1950s, when she worked at various locations through the assistance of the Canadian National Institute of the Blind (CNIB). She managed the CNIB canteen at the Sherbrook Baths for several years, sold lottery ticket in downtown Winnipeg, and was a long-time avid member of Toastmistress. Georgie moved to Fred Douglas Place in 1989, where she enjoyed many happy years, and through the dedicated support of home care providers, she was able to live independently until July of 2009. Georgies feisty spirit and independence will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Vivian of Stanley ND, nieces Debbie (Stu) Innes and Bonnie Van Steelandt of Winnipeg, Deanna Barnes, Moosomin, SK, and Barbara (Kelly) Doherty and nephew John of Brandon, Manitoba, and many great-nieces/nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Gordon (1943) and Bertha {Norton} (1994), her brother Bill and nephew Jim (1987), and her great-nephew Eric (2009). A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, March 26th at Fred Douglas Place, 333 Vaughan Street in Winnipeg. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27th at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Deloraine, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CNIB, 1080 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, R3G 3M3 or the Assiniboine Park Conservatory, 15 Conservatory Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3P 2N5.
