LEVERINGTON Gullett): It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our wife, mother and grandmother, Eileen on December 27, 2009 at the age of 73. Eileen (Maw as her grandkids called her) was born on the family farm in Hilton, Manitoba, on July 15, 1936. She was raised on the farm with her parents Helen and Garner Gullett and three siblings, May, Garth and Norma. She attended grade school in Ninette. She moved to Brandon at the age of 15 where she worked for the Brandon Wheat City Roofing company. At the age of 16, Eileen started working at the Codville Company and it was there that she met her true love, William Leverington. Bill and Eileen were married August 28, 1954 in Brandon. Ten years later they purchased the Lucky Dollar store in Melita and ventured to the town they call home on May 19, 1964. They owned and operated the store until November 8, 1977. Papa and Maw worked side by side for 55 years. They ran a catering business for approximately 20 years. Maw was a fabulous cook/baker and many folks in the area enjoyed her creations over the years. There was not an event to large or too small for Eileen. She was well known for the number of different salads she would create. Maw had many talents and it would seem that no matter what she touched the outcome was second to none. She attended many auction sales over the years for a deal to bring home to restore. For years she spent hours refinishing antique furniture. When the refinishing became to difficult, Maw changed passions to sewing, quilting, embroidering. For the last several years she spend hundreds of hours sewing the most beautiful quilts (baby, twin, queen and king sizes). Many were given away to friends and family as well as donated to organizations as fund raisers. Her children and grandchildren benefitted the most from this talent and have many items to remember her by. Eileen was a community lady and when asked to help, she was always willing to pitch in and do what she could. Volunteerism was a natural thing for Eileen: she coordinated the swimming lessons in Melita for 20 years; was the draw master for the Ladies Curling club for 9 years; sewed ball uniforms for the minor ball teams in both Melita and Pierson many years ago; spent hours at the arena keeping score at the minor hockey games and would coordinate the many billets required when a tournament was held in town; Eileen was a Kinette for 11 years and the part of the K-40 group for many years continuing to help with Annual supper until 2008. Maw enjoyed watching curling and baseball on TV. Another passion Maw had was for her flowers. Her specialty was the begonias in the front of her home. Maw was a very special lady and will be dearly missed by her husband of 55 years, Bill, children; Garlen Maxwell (Danny), Keith Leverington (Lori), Janet Cheveldayoff (Kevin), grandchildren: Logan, Jared and Tori Maxwell; Carly and Kristen Leverington; Chase and Alexi Cheveldayoff; brother: Jack Gullett; sister: May Dawley (Garth); brother-in-law Vern Vestby (Marlene); sisters-in-law Donna Wright (Dave) and Lynne Leverington; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Melita Cemetery, Melita, Manitoba. Reverend Barb Alston will officiate. Donations may be given to the Melita Palliative Care Box 459 Melita, Manitoba, ROM ILO. Arrangements in care of Redpath Funeral Home Melita 522-3361.
