BURR: George Allan Burr,July 13, 1922 - June 14, 2010. George Allan Burr, son of Henry (Harry) and Ann Burr, passed away Monday June 14, 2010. Allan will be remembered by Ruth, his wife of 64 years, his children, Bob (Dorothy), Dave (Lois), daughter- in-law Judy (Dave). His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren, Mike (Angie), Chris (Michelle), Jennifer, Grant (Karen), Glen (Charlene) and six great grandchildren. Allan will also be remembered by his sisters, Betty and Louise, sisters-in-laws, Grace (Ralph), Ruby, Marylou, Jean (Ed), Dianna (Charlie), Lucy and brothers-in-law Aime, Stan (Carm). Allan was predeceased by his eldest son Harry Allan Burr. Allan was born in Deloraine and moved to Goodlands at age 5. Goodlands would become his home for the next 82 years. In his early years Allan helped in the family business Burr’s Grocery and also in Burr’s Transfer, a local freight business. Later, after being married, he joined the railroad, spending part of his time learning Morse code. During WWII he enlisted and with his telegraph background was assigned to the Air Force. He spent the next 2 1Ž2 years training in Winnipeg, Montreal and Rivers. His dad, Henry, was hurt in a truck accident and Allan was given a compassionate discharge to go back and help run the family store. In 1945 he and the love of his life Ruth Rosemary Burns were married. In 1949 they bought the store from his parents and operated it until they sold and retired in 1987. Where to retire was not a hard decision. Goodlands had been very good to both Allan and Ruth. A comfortable retirement home was built and enjoyed for the next 22 years. In the fall of 2009 they sold their home and moved to Steinbach to be closer to family. Unfortunately Allan’s health deteriorated over the next several months. At his passing he was being cared for at Vita Hospital. Allan had a long and satisfying life. He had the gift of good friends that kept in touch and a family who cared for him very much. We give thanks for his time with us and for those who cared for him. He will be missed but his memory will live on in those who loved him. Memorial donations may be made to Goodlands Community Fellowship Church or to a charity of one’s choice. Smith Funeral Home, Deloraine. www.wheatlnd.com
