POSTHUMUS: Frederic Matthias Posthumus. Sadly but quietly, on June 30th, Fred passed away in his favorite chair in his home at the age of 73. Fred was born on July 25, 1936, in Rapid City to Fred and Beatrice Posthumus. At the age of six the family moved to Brandon where Fred received his schooling. Growing up in a family of seven siblings, Fred and his brothers and sisters were kept busy with chores like gardening and milking cows. Fred had a passion for sports. He enjoyed baseball and golfing as a youngster and was very resourceful and made his own golf clubs and fishing poles. Fishing was a favorite past-time that he enjoyed throughout his life. Fred worked many odd jobs as a teenager. He worked briefly for the railroad and in construction. He enjoyed a long career as an Industrial Mechanic at the potato factory in Carberry, and retired in 1998. Fred was bery handy and loved fixing things like lawnmowers and cars. He took great pride in his yard and grew a large vegetable garden each year. He enjoyed coffee with friends and playing cards for hours. Most important was family. He married Iris Sparrow in 1961. They had two children and three grandchildren. Fred loved to watch them play hockey and baseball. Fred leaves to mourn his loss: His wife of 49 years, Iris; son Garry and his daughter Meaghan; daughter Kim and her husband Don Scott and their children, Chelcie and Torey; twin brother Frank; sister Mona (Steve); brother Matt (Gloria); brother Keith; brothers- in-law Cecil (Ramona), Jim (Yvonne), Nelson (Phyllis), Leslie (Donna), Milt (Linda), and Lorne (Debbie) Sparrow; aunt Florence Loeppky; uncle Bud Knight; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral service was held July 6, 2010 at the Carberry United Church with Rev. Minho Yoo officiating. The eulogy was graciously delivered by Mrs. Mary-Ella Proven. Interment followed in Carberry Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gerald Sparrow, Devon Sparrow, Danny Sparrow, Marshall Sparrow, Matthew Sparrow, and Albert Naismith. White’s Funeral Home in care of arrangements. Donations in memory of Fred may be made to Carberry Minor Hockey or Carberry Minor Baseball, Box 670, Carberry, Manitoba, R0K 0H0 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, #3-824-18th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 5B7.
