NEUFELD: Peter Neufeld, born December 26, 1929 at 8-3-20 sw of Boissevain, Manitoba. Deceased July 13, 2010 at Grace Memorial Hospital. Peter was born on the family farm, where he lived for 64 years of his life. He received his elementary schooling at Bluevale just west of the farm and his high schooling at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. He graduated from grade 12 in 1948. He returned to the farm where he worked in partnership with his father. He was baptised on his confession of faith at the Whitewater Mennonite Church in 1952. In 1954 he married Jessie Cornelson and they took up residence on the family farm. Peter & Jessie were blessed with four children; Tenley, Tannis, Rocky, and Velvet. Their first child, Wendy was still-born. Peter’s favourite pastime was the sport of baseball; he was a talented pitcher and demonstrated great speed on the base paths - whether playing or watching he simply loved the game. Additionally he was a very proud father and Grandfather, and thus he was a regular spectator at his children’s ball games and music concerts, a practice that he continued with his grandchildren. Peter and Jessie farmed together until 1994, when they retired to their present home in Winnipeg. Even after retirement he played baseball in the World Senior Games in Winnipeg in 2000. He was also very committed to his Bible studies and especially the study of prophecy. In 2005 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and completed the prescribed treatment. He returned to excellent health walking regularly and travelling to watch his beloved family play sports and participate in concerts and church services. A shoulder injury in 2008 and another in 2009 slowed him down a little but he soon returned to a very active daily routine. His family was planning to celebrate his 80th birthday on the 24th of July. In the early hours of Tuesday, July 13th his heart stopped beating and his earthly life came to its conclusion. Peter is predeceased by his daughter Wendy, parents, Peter and Sara Neufeld, brother Abe, sisters Mary, Jessie, and Sarah, sister-in-law Hilda, brothers-in-law George Duerksen and Jake Reimer. He is survived by his wife Jessie, children Tenley (Herman Dyck), Tannis (Nostedt), Rocky, Velvet (Dale Sulymka);grandchildren Johnathon, Jordan and Sterling Nostedt and Jada Dyck. The family wishes to thank the Winnipeg paramedics, medical staff and Chaplain at Grace Hospital and all who have expressed their condolences during this difficult time. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at Portage Avenue Church, 1420 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Donations can be made to Mennonite Central Committee ~ Salt (Jada) or to Cancer Care Manitoba.
