THOMSON: The death of David John "Jack" Thomson occurred at the Rivers Hospital, on Monday, July 12, 2010. Jack was born in Souris, Manitoba April 18, 1930, the eldest son of Bill and Olive Thomson. He grew up on the family farm north of Souris with his brothers, Norm and Don. His education began in a country school in South Beresford, followed by high school in Souris. Jack began his career with the Royal Bank and worked in several communities, retiring in 1984 in Rivers. In 1955, he married Shirley Stevenson and they raised five children. Shirley passed away in 1979. In 1983, he married Joan Worden and they were happily married for twenty-seven years. He had a great love for family that grew with every new addition. He had a place for them all in his heart. After retirement, he always hoped for a call to the farmto help with seeding or harvest. He was always there for a friend or neighbor, especially in winter with his snow blower. He was well known for his shuttle services for friends and grandchildren who needed last minute rides. Jack loved nature and waited every spring for the return of the purple martins and the arrival of the crocuses. His favorite hobby was working in his yard, especially with his roses. His trips down town usually resulted in numerous visits with people and the opportunity to tell his stories with friends and neighbors. In his earlier years he enjoyed curling and golf. Jack is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Gord (Elizabeth), Janis (Rick), Joyce (Jack), Bill (Dani), David (Cindy) and step-children; Pat, Brian (Lynne), Terry (Grant) and Jory (Steve). There are twenty-four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Jack was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Olive, a brother, Don Thomson, his first wife, Shirley and a granddaughter, Julie Stefanson. The Ceremony to Celebrate Jack's Life was held at the Rivers United Church on Thursday, July 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Glenda Beauchamp officiated. Interment followed in the Rivers Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Jack to Riverdale Palliative Care, Box 428, Rivers, Manitoba R0K 1X0. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
