ATCHISON: John Wilbert Atchison passed away July 11 at the age of 90 years at Brandon Health Center. wilbert was born on May 9, 1920 in Pipestone, Manitoba. He was the second of three children raised on the family farm in Findlay. In 1942 he enlisted in the army, training in Ontario and was sent overseas to England. In 1943-45 he was sent to Sicily, Italy, Belgium and Holland as a member of the Canadian Ordnance Corps attached to the 5th Division. When the war ended in 1945 he returned to Findlay arriving home in August 1945. He married his one true love, Lillian Mae Owen in 1949 and they had four daughters, Arlene, Linda, Judy and Shelley. He raised purebred Hereford cattle of 40 years. Wilbert and Lillian retired to Brandon in 1985. Dancing was a big part of the Atchison social life and Lillian and Wilbert were truly wonderful to watch waltzing around the dance floor. He took great pride in all Legion matters an was twice president of the Pipestone Legion. He enjoyed sports in his younger days, playing baseball and golf, but curling truly was his favorite. He curled in the Brandon Masters Curling League well into his 80s. Summers after retirement in 1985 were spent with the Good Sams RV Travel Club; and later at the seasonal campground at Oak Lake Island Resort. Wilbert was predeceased by his mother and father, brother Henry and sister Dorothy. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillian; daughters Arlene (Tully Hatch) of Oak Lake, Linda (Del Hunter) of Brandon, Judy (Bill Berry) of Brandon, and Shelly (Ray Mispelon) of Sinclair. As well 12 grandchildren plus partners and 13 3/4 great grandchildren. A kind loving man. He made a great impression on all who knew him.He had a nature you could not help loving, and a heart that was purer than gold,and to those who knew him and loved him, his memory will never grow cold.
