SALMON: Brian William Salmon of Birtle, Manitoba, passed away with his family by his side, Wednesday July 21st at Russell district hospital at the age of 64 years, following a courageous 10 month battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born May 2, 1946, Brian was the third son of George and Wilhemenia (Stewart) Salmon. Brian grew up and attended school in Birtle. A brief career with Gulf oil was followed by his first trucking job with Em Williams. His love of the road and driving truck led to the purchase of his own, and many years of gravelling, hauling salt for Kleysens, and driving for Trans-X followed. On August 30, 1969 Brian married Gail Bolter. Together they welcomed two daughters, Deanna (1975) and Michelle (1978). Brian’s girls were his number one priority, and coming off the road to spend more time with his family was a must. He began working for the Town of Birtle in 1991 and was Town Maintenance Foreman for 15 years before his retirement in 2006. His love for trucking took over and he was back behind the wheel driving for Kestirke Trucking until his diagnosis. He also enjoyed doing yard care for his many clients in Birtle which he continued even after his diagnosis. His strong work ethic and willingness to help all made him an exceptional asset to the community. Brian had a zest for life like no other – always the life of the party, he was known for his crazy antics from the dance floor to the hockey ice. He was a proud member of the Birtle Fire Department for over 20 years, and a founding member of the Birtle Old Puckers Hockey Team. He enjoyed many years of camping at Aspen Grove Campground (Cactus Hills), Biking – including participating in the Riding Mountain Bike Challenge with daughter Michelle, Snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hunting, marathon running, and fishing trips including one final trip to Flin Flon the weekend before his passing with son in law Jerry and friend Glenn Hodgson. No father was more proud of his daughters. He was their biggest supporter, fiercest protector and loved them like no other. He was also proud when he welcomed son in laws Jerry Lovas and Randy Bryant into the family – saying he couldn’t have picked them better himself. His grandchildren were also his pride and joy - Amy (10), Abby (7), Monelle (5) and Baker (2) will miss him dearly. September 15, 2009 Brian was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He faced his diagnosis with the same strength, courage and dignity he lived his life. He was determined to have as much time with the family he so loved and vowed to do whatever it took. He faced surgery, chemotherapy and radiation with the sense of humor, stubbornness and strength we all admired in him. We are better people for having him in our lives. Brian was predeceased by parents George and Winnie, and brothers Morris, and Bruce. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 40 years – Gail, daughter Deanna (Jerry) Lovas of Brandon and their daughters Amy and Abby. Daughter Michelle (Randy) Bryant of Miniota, and their children Monelle and Baker; Mother in law Alice Bolter of Birtle, Brother Ken Salmon of Winnipeg, and brother-in-law Jack (Judy) Bolter of Calgary. Brian also leaves to mourn many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral Service was held Saturday July 24th from the Birtle Community Hall with Rev. Heather Robbins of the Birtle United Church officiating. Daughters Deanna and Michelle gave the eulogy – a fitting tribute titled “Life Lessons” Interment followed in Birtle Cemetary. Honor Guard was members of the The Birtle Fire Department. Donations may be made in memory to CancerCare Manitoba. Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service of Russell was in care of arrangements.
