PLAISIER: Doreen May (Allum) passed away suddenly at her home in Brandon on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the age of 73 years. She was born September 23, 1936 in Oak Lake, Manitoba. Doreen was the youngest of a very large family and attended school in Oak Lake. Upon graduation, she began work as a switchboard operator with MTS. She worked for a few years until her marriage to Gaston Plaisier on April 22, 1956. She spent the next few years following Dad's work until purchasing a home in 1964 in Brandon in Green Acres. With a family of three children, Mom was the CEO of Home Based Activities for many years. She then went to work for a period of time at the Brandon Sun and greatly enjoyed her employment there. In the early years in Brandon, she could be found in a ski-doo suit watching her children play hockey outdoors at Green Acres Community Center. Later she attended many hockey tournaments all over Canada greatly enjoying those times and those individuals around her. Many strong and lasting friendships were formed on those numerous trips over the years. Her passions in life were family, immediate and extended, her extensive network of friends, her many travels and her garden/flowers. All played an extremely important role in her life. She spent much time caring for her mother, her brothers and lastly Dad, while age and disease made it impossible for those to care for themselves. She was extremely gifted in the area of care and was also extremely dedicated to those she cared for. She was a regular at Brandon Care Homes for many years and always took the time to lend an ear or provide help to any resident that approached her. Mom suffered a heart attack about 5 years ago, but that only slowed her pace temporarily. She made the most out of her time and greatly enjoyed the many outings with her special friends here in Brandon. I do not believe that Mom ever had any acquaintances, rather anyone she met and spent a bit of time with, was considered by her a true friend. To our family she was the Pillar and the Teacher of Life. She loved us dearly and consistently showed that in her actions. She is extremely proud of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She instilled in us manners, determination and drive. She never allowed any of us to lie down and give up no matter how difficult the situation seemed at the time. Her hand was always there to help us back to our feet. In thinking back, Mom's approach in life was extremely simple "Listen more than you talk." Doreen is survived by son Doug (Branka), granddaughter Tina, great granddaughter Mae, Deborah (Brandt), great granddaughter Ashley, son Cam (Vicki) and grandchildren Dillen, Sydney and Carson, and by her brothers George and Cecil. Doreen was predeceased by her husband Gaston, her parents Thomas and Florence; brothers Harry and Henry and by her granddaughter Christina. As you will notice we have reposted Dad's obituary below. Mom's wish was that her and Dad's life would be celebrated together and that they be interred together upon her passing. The service to celebrate both Doreen and Gaston's life will be held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday August 25, 2010 at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at Brandon Cemetery. The family would like to thank Mom's very special neighbours for their valued friendship and assistance to both her and dad over the many years. This is greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank her many special friends like Donna Quinn, June Fleury, Georgina Joynt and many others not mentioned here, for the terrific companionship you provided mom over the years. She truly loved you all very much. Expressions of sympathy may be made atwww.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
