STRACHAN: Calvin James Strachan of Hamiota passed away August 17, 2010 at the Hamiota District Health Centre after a brief illness. Calvin was born Feb. 17, 1959, to Harold and Florence Strachan of Decker, Manitoba. He attended school in Decker, Crandall, Hamiota and after graduation, ACC in Brandon. In 1978, he began working for the CNR as a trackman and later as a machine operator. After 19 years, he left CNR to be closer to home. He began raising cattle and farming, while working for Gregory Sand and Gravel and Cattlex. In 2007 he left farming and began working for the Dept. of Transportation and Infrastructure in Birtle and Shoal Lake. On November 30, 1985, he married Evie Cowling of Crandall. Together, they raised two daughters; Whitney born 1992, and Morgan born 1995. Calvins greatest joy was watching his girls participate in their many activities and sports. In his younger years, Calvin enjoyed hockey and water skiing, and later golf. Many weekends were spent at the family cabin with family and friends. His competitive spirit was always evident whether on the hockey ice or the golf course. However, his reward was time spent with great friends and great teammates. Calvin is survived by his wife, Evie, and daughters Whitney and Morgan. He is also survived by his parents, Harold and Florence Strachan; brother Murray(Caroline) Strachan; sisters Linda (Bob) Wickens, Judy(Greg) Rahn; brothers in law Bruce(Sandra) Cowling, Art Cowling, Bob Cowling; sisters in law Maureen Cowling, Betty Cowling (Jim Odo); and many nieces and nephews. For those wishing to make a donation in Calvins memory may do so to the Hamiota Golf Club, Hamiota Aquatic Centre, or the Hamiota District Sports Complex. Thank YouWe wish to thank the following: Hamiota Health Centre for their care and support throughout this difficult journey; the group of friends and volunteers who prepared the rink for the funeral service; Barbara Rediker for taking time from her vacation to help a friend; Dwayne Campbell and staff for their part in a great service; all those who sent food, flowers and baking to our homes. We are so fortunate to live in such a caring and supportive community. Thank YouEvie, Whitney, Morgan and the Cowling and Strachan families.
