WADDELL: John Richard Waddell, of Newdale passed away at Country Meadows Care Home Neepawa, Manitoba at the age of 97 years on Wednesday, October 13th 2010. John was born on December 20, 1912 in Winnipeg, eldest son of Annie McTavish and Thomas Andrew Waddell. He was predeceased by his wife Alice Gertrude (Duncalfe) on December 1, 1990; also by his sister Isabel Cooke, brothers; Gordon, Thomas and Frazer. He is survived by his sister Mae (Sewart), sister-in-law Edith and brothers Boyd and Menzie. John received his early education at Newdale/Oldale schools. He attended the University of Manitoba in the faculty of engineering. In 1937, he moved to Flin Flon to work for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company. He met and married Alice on September 16, 1939. John and his family moved to Newdale in October of 1947 to establish Waddell Motors in partnership with his brother Tom which they operated until 1975. John was very active in the Newdale Branch of the Oddfellows Lodge. In 1955 John was ordained as an elder in Newdale United Church, in 1966 he was made clerk of the session, and in 1993 he retired to Honorary Elder. At the age of 86, John moved into a suite at Harrison House, where he lived for 10 years. During his lifetime John enjoyed extensive travel with his family. In January 2009 he relocated to the Seniors Care home in Neepawa. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Ellen (Snedden), sons Harry (Ruth), Edward (Bonnie) and Robert (Janet) and 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 7 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Newdale United Church on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Newdale United Church Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of Whites Funeral Home in Neepawa 204-476-2848.
